In the sixth minute, a costly error in possession allowed Cagliari to take the lead: Trepy was left unmarked and found Raterink coming through, who clinically scored. AC Milan maintained their momentum into the second half, as Kehayov produced a save to stop Mancioppi in the 51st minute. In the 62nd minute, Borsani couldn't convert from close range. Trepy looked dangerous again in the 67th minute, but Bouyer stayed alert. Then the goal that sealed the game came in the 68th minute, Scotti's delivery hit Grandu's hand inside the box, and the referee called for a penalty. Scotti stepped up and converted with composure. The Rossoneri continued their attack: Plazzotta missed in the 73rd minute, and Mancioppi came close two minutes later, shooting just wide. A string of great saves from Kehayov kept the score down as he denied Borsani twice (76', 78') and Mancioppi again (81').
