Chelsea are sacking manager after manager. The people picking the managers are the sporting directors. The people who picked the sporting directors are the owners.
Something is going wrong in that chain, and according to former Blue Joe Cole, there needs to be more accountability.
“The owners [BlueCo] are the ones who need to shoulder the blame because they’re appointing the managers and they’re putting the system in place that’s not allowing the managers to thrive.
“The sad thing is there doesn’t seem to be any kind of appraisal or genuine enquiry into why this isn’t working at the football club.”
That’s what fans have been saying for years now. In fact, all the whispers from inside the club are that the sporting directors aren’t under pressure, and the whole lot of them were given extended contracts after the Club World Cup last summer.
The mention of a “period of self reflection” in the statement announcing the sacking of Liam Rosenior is the closest we’ve got to a hint that things might be changing – but even then, that was almost certainly written by them.
