Matt Fitzpatrick's playoff approach shot at Harbour Town was a mis-hit that led to a legendary moment, allowing him to win against World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. He acknowledged pulling the shot but still managed to hole a birdie putt for victory.
Based off the one-handed finish, it was clear Matt Fitzpatrick did not strike his approach shot on the first and only playoff hole at Harbour Town exactly how he wanted to. But that didn't matter, because the "mis-hit" still resulted in one of the more legendary shots into the iconic 18th, and the Englishman was able to finish it off by holing the putt for birdie to win.
But, just as Fitzpatrick expected, he was asked about the shot that helped him take down World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in his victory press conference, and he did not tell a single lie.
"Yeah, I'll be honest. I pulled it a little bit. You wanted that, did you? Is that what you wanted?" Fitzpatrick said to the reporter who asked if that's where he was aiming. "No, I pulled it a little bit. We had the commentary booth in the background, that was like our target, so that was probably right half of the green, right edge maybe."

Fortunately for Fitzy, the wind was also blowing hard off the Calibogue Sound, pushing what may have been a dead pull back toward the flag and making it look planned. Scheffler's approach was a push, and after he failed to chip in for birdie, Fitzpatrick capitalized on the great break with a birdie conversion for his second RBC Heritage win, both of them coming in a playoff.
Even crazier? The approach was hit with a 4 iron, a club he did not hit the entire week to that point. True story.
"But it was such a great number for 4-iron," he said, adding, "And it's the only round all week we've had 4-iron in the bag. Sorry, no, maybe the first round, but didn't even hit a shot with it on the first round.
"Again, great planning from Dan [Fitzpatrick's caddie, Daniel Parratt]. Just so aware of what's going on with the wind even before we tee off and stuff. But I knew after the one in regulation, I had basically hit it as well as I could, and then in the fairway it was the same story. I knew I could just hit it. Fortunately, I hit a great shot."
He sure did. Even if it was a mis-hit.
