Georgia softball hasn't had a good run in the SEC Tournament in quite a while and Tony Baldwin's fifth trip into the postseason is inching closer with an 8 p.m. first pitch against LSU on Wednesday, May 6.
Georgia has not won a conference tournament title since 2014 under Lu Harris-Champer. And that was the Bulldogs' only conference tournament title in program history, which dates back to 1997.
Since Baldwin took over the program from the long-standing Harris-Champer, Georgia has only made it as far as the second round.
In 2022 and 2023, the Bulldogs were one-and-done with a 9-5 loss to Ole Miss and a 2-1 extra inning loss to South Carolina, respectively.
In 2024, they made it two rounds after defeating Auburn 6-5 in a 14-inning stretch before falling to Florida 9-4. And in 2025, they went the same distance with a mercy-rule 8-0 win over Kentucky before falling to Arkansas 5-1.
They have two SEC regular season titles, dated 2003 and 2005, and have made the NCAA Tournament every year since 2002, except 2020 when it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They have never won it all but have made the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City five times and as recently as 2021.
But this year feels different. There's something in the air at Jack Turner Stadium. May that be by way of the transfer portal, which brought in some stunners like Keirstin Roose and Addisen Fisher, or by way of what the G represents, who knows, but what Baldwin knew at the start of the season was they were prepared to work hard and play hard.
Each Dawg has its own bark and the women on this year's roster embody that philosophy. That energy showed in every SEC series this season, the grit, but especially in their final one when they managed to topple a higher-ranked foe in Florida, 2-1.
Of course, that's only part of why the Bulldogs might just surprise some people with their SEC Tournament run in 2026. Here's some other things that can carry them over the hump:
Georgia is fourth in the SEC for batting average with a .354. Sarah Gordon, Gabi Novickas and Jaydyn Goodwin are in the conference's top 15 batters and lead the team with averages of .411, .410 and .405, respectively.
The team's plate presence has improved quite aggressively. The trio combines for 171 of the team's 484 total hits.
Last season, Gordon and Goodwin were in the top three for batting average but didn't break .350 on the season. Now, as seniors, they've semented themselves as versatile leaders.
But the key here is Novickas. A rookie.
Novickas, who earned Freshman of the Week honors on Monday, May 4, is a pretty big reason why they won the Florida series. Saturday afternoon, on May 2, Novickas blasted a walk-off grand slam out of the park to give Georgia the 9-1 lead.
The infielder was also 3-for-3 with a run and two RBIs in the Game 2 walk-off win, sparking the climb from trailing 7-2 to winning 9-7 when she singled through the right side.
She's the only freshman first baseman in the SEC to start every conference game. She's also one of only five conference first basemen with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
Fisher came to Georgia from UCLA as one of the most highly touted players in the transfer portal. She was a top 10 finalist for NFCA Freshman of the Year with the Bruins and currently leads the Bulldogs with a 2.84 ERA and 10-5 record, collecting 57 strikeouts.
Her experience is lifted by veteran Randi Roelling, who has started 23 of 30 games this season. Roelling has a 3.01 ERA and 16-9 record in the circle, collecting 120 strikeouts. They are in the conference's top 30 pitchers.
