Northwestern defeated JMU 17-5, marking a significant win for the top-seeded team. Madison Taylor scored eight goals, solidifying her status as a top player in the nation.
All year long, top-seeded Northwestern has padded its resume with major win after major win against the top teams in the nation. However, despite having two wins against then-No. 1 ranked opponents (North Carolina and Maryland), the âCatsâ 17-5 routing of James Madison â fueled by an eight-goal offensive gem from Madison Taylor â might have been their biggest statement win of the year.
Here are three takeaways from the âCatsâ big win.
Northwesternâs star attacker outdid herself again on Sunday, leading the âCats with eight goals.
With everybody at Martin Stadium knowing the No. 1 pick in the WLL College Draft was the premier talent on the field, Madison Taylor still found a way to stuff the stat sheet. Taylorâs âbagâ as an attacker was on full display, with speed, spins, cuts and some extras being added on to each finish. For goal no. 8, Taylor somehow found the back of the net through a sea of purple smothering her inside the fan.
Facing the No. 22 team in the country, Taylor walked away with a season-high in goals, besting her three separate seven goal performances in February and March. After this game, itâs hard not to think Taylor is playing like the playing like she is the nationâs best.
In constructing this takeaway, it would be unfair to not acknowledge that by the statistics, Taylor was not the most prolific attacker in the nation in the regular season. Rather, that title belongs to North Carolinaâs Chloe Humphrey, who averages a nation-leading 5.41 goals per game, almost a full goal more than Maddy T.
However, against JMU, Taylor once again demonstrated that she is a big moment player. With her eight goals against the Dukes, Taylor moved into second all-time in career goals in NCAA Tournament games (52), behind fellow Wildcat Izzy Scane, who holds the record with 63. Sunday marked Taylorâs fifth game in May-play netting five or more goals.
Northwesternâs No. 25 lives for May and has proven it time and time again in a manner that no other player in the country, at this point in time, has been able to replicate.
Thereâs no debating that the star of Northwesternâs defense is Jenika Cuocco, the 2026 Big Ten Tournamentâs Most Outstanding Player. However, the âCatsâ defense proved once again on Sunday that it plays its best when it doesnât have to lean on its last line of defense.
Northwestern won the game against JMU with a final score of 17-5.
Madison Taylor scored eight goals in the game against JMU.
The win is considered a statement because it showcased Northwestern's dominance, especially following their victories against top-ranked teams.
Madison Taylor is highlighted as the best player in the country after her impressive performance.

The core defenders of Kelly Amonte Hillerâs defense â players like Mary Carroll, Jaylen Rosga and Mckenzie Brown, who combined for six of the âCatsâ 10 caused turnovers â were phenomenal all afternoon against JMU, forcing the Dukesâ out of their offensive identity. The gold and purple were held to just five scores, its lowest offensive output all season-long, in large part because they couldnât get the ball in the vicinity of the cage. JMU averaged 20.4 shots on goal throughout the season, but had just 12 against Northwestern on Sunday.
Northwesternâs defensive shutdown was independent of Cuoccoâs goalkeeping abilities, as âCats defenders worked to take away James Madisonâs key players. The Dukesâ offense has ran through three players all season long: Payton Root, Jordan Peterson and Olivia Matthews. JMUâs triangle of attack averaged 9.48 points per game this year, while accounting for nearly half of their goal scoring. Against the âCats, Root, Peterson and Matthews combined for just two points and one goal and were completely neutralized by head coach Kelly Amonte Hillerâs back line.
Performances like these fall in line with stalwart defensive games against Oregon, Syracuse and Michigan and show that the âCats donât need Cuocco to have a save percentage over .600 to have a good day.
Cuocco may be the best in the country, but itâs also important to remember that Northwestern has defensive depth beyond the Drexel transfer.
Donât worry, I knocked on wood.
But with its dominant win against JMU, Northwestern firmly established itself as the favorite to win the national championship (if they hadnât already).
Just two days prior to Northwesternâs tilt against the Dukes, No. 22 JMU had taken down No. 16 Notre Dame (according to the IWLCA rankings) 13-12. The Dukesâ win was a statement in its own right, considering that the Fighting Irish are one of the few teams in the country that can claim better results than Northwestern against two common opponents â Central Michigan and Syracuse.
With the win, James Madison entered the draw circle against the âCats as one of the hottest teams in the nation, with an eight game win streak spanning the entire month of April.
On Sunday, all of the Dukesâ momentum met a brick wall. The âCats were in a stratosphere of their own, completely dominating end-to-end for all 60 minutes.
Sure, Northwestern was favored to beat James Madison. But the 12-point victory â four goals more than any other defeat JMU suffered this season (closest margin of victory an opponent had to that point being UNC, who won 19-11 in February) â marked a new level of dominance for this yearâs rendition of the Lake Show.
The Big Ten champions flexed their muscles, scoring the second highest total JMUâs defense had surrendered all season, while the NUâs defensive group played one of its best games of the season, posting the lowest tally of points its allowed against a ranked opponent in 2026. As Maddie Epke put it:
With its win over the Dukes, Northwestern advances to face one of the three teams it lost to in the regular season: the no. 8-seeded Colorado Buffaloes.
While the âCats soared to victory at Martin Stadium, the Buffaloes won an in-state Second Round matchup against No. 15 Denver, punching their ticket to their first NCAA quarterfinal in program history. After trailing 4-1 in the early going, Colorado finished the game 10-5, riding three goals from Teagan Ryan to a historic victory.
After slaughtering Colorado 20-5 in their 2025 tilt, the âCats were heavy favorites entering the second game of their season against the Buffaloes. However, Coloradoâs nation-leading scoring defense got the best of Northwesternâs high-flying offense, shutting out Amonte Hillerâs squad for the final 9:17 of the game for a 10-9 victory.
94 days later, Northwestern gets a crack at revenge.
The âCats and the Buffaloes will enter the draw circle on Thursday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will televised on ESPNU.
