The Detroit Tigers just lost Tarik Skubal, who is set to undergo elbow surgery to remove loose bodies. That leaves their next-best starter as Framber Valdez, whom the Tigers acquired during the offseason. On Tuesday, Valdez was involved in a tense moment after a pitch near Trevor Story that led to both benches clearing. After the game, Valdez clarified that it was not intentional.
âIt was not intentional," Valdez said through an interpreter. "It might look like it, but it wasn't. I was trying to throw strikes after the two consecutive home runs. I was trying to go back in the zone and that pitch came out of my hand."
The timing of the pitch did not help matters, which is why the Boston Red Sox felt there may have been intent. Tigers manager AJ Hinch did not fully back his pitcher, making it clear the situation was not a good look.

âWe play a really good brand of baseball here. That didn't feel like it. I'm not judging intent. But I know when you go out on the field in those confrontations, you usually feel like you are in your right. It didn't feel good being out there,â Hinch told the media.
It is rarely a good sign when a manager does not fully defend his players. However, this is not the first questionable incident involving Valdez in less than a year. Last season, he was involved in a miscommunication with his catcher.
âBoth Framber Valdez and CĂ©sar Salazar were brought into the managerâs office after the game. Valdez is said to have apologized to Salazar but said the cross-up was not on purpose,â JomBoy Media wrote.
This is another moment that does not reflect well on Valdez, especially with his manager publicly distancing himself from the situation. The Tigers are trying to get on track, but this incident could linger in the clubhouse.
Hinch has every right to be frustrated with Valdez after emotions boiled over in a high-tension moment. The Tigers pride themselves on professionalism, and Hinch is not going to let one incident define that standard.
