The Detroit Tigers' have fired their Triple-A manager, Gabe Alvarez, after he sent an "inappropriate" message to a female staff member.
The Tigers announced that Alvarez, 52, had been relieved of his role at the affiliate team, the Toledo Mud Hens, during the season because of a "violation of club policy" on Tuesday, May 5. Additional details were not made known at the time.
On the Wednesday evening, Alvarez spoke out in a statement to ESPN that shed light on his firing.
"I sent a single text message to a colleague that I intended as a lighthearted joke," he explained. "Shortly after sending it, I recognized that the message was inappropriate and did not reflect the values and judgment I strive to upload, and I immediately reached out to clarify my intent."

Alvarez said he "never intended to cause discomfort of offense" and added, "I regret that the message created this situation. This was an isolated incident and not reflective of my long-standing record of professionalism, respect for colleagues, and conduct over the course of my career."
Alvarez, a USC alum who also coached at the university, spent three seasons in the MLB playing for the Tigers and the San Diego Padres. In 2022, he began working with the Tigers organization and was promoted to manage the Triple-A affiliate in 2025.
According to ESPN, sources close to the Tigers said Alvarez had a "clean file" around the organization before he sent the inappropriate message on Monday.

Mike Hessman will serve as interim manager of the Tigers' affiliate team in Alvarez's absence.
PEOPLE reached out to the Tigers for comment, but did not immediately hear back.
