Detroit — Nothing but storm clouds.
The first one the Tigers dealt with Monday wasn’t atmospheric. It was announced before the game that ace Tarik Skubal was placed on the 15-day injured list with loose bodies in his elbow. He will undergo a surgical procedure to have them removed.
Tigers third baseman Zach McKinstry (39) doubles in the eighth inning.
The second one was atmospheric. The start time was pushed up 30 minutes because a fierce storm was in the forecast for later in the evening, and it felt like more like a race to beat the rain than a timeless game of baseball.
One pitch into the eighth inning, after a particularly close-feeling bolt of lightning, crew chief Dan Iassogna called for the tarp. The Red Sox were up 5-2.
The crowd was asked to move to the concourse as the Tigers came to bat in the bottom of the sixth with the game still scoreless.
The Tigers, though, broke through, in a manner of speaking, in that half-inning against Red Sox lefty Payton Tolle, who had set down the first 12 hitters in the game and would allow just one hit through seven impressive innings.
He hit Colt Keith to start the inning and walked Jahmai Jones with one out. Then the Boston defense imploded.

Against the Rangers Sunday night, manager AJ Hinch deployed a fleet of relievers. The hope Monday was that right-hander Ty Madden, called up from Triple-A Toledo to spot Skubal, would be able to cover bulk innings.
Which he did.
Madden, who had some bumpy outings at Toledo, gave the Tigers five scoreless innings, allowing four hits, two of them infield hits, and struck out seven. He mixed five pitches but leaned hard on a much-improved cutter, getting five whiffs on 13 swings and six called strikes with it.
In the third inning, he pitched his way out of a second-and-third, no-out mess. He struck out Contreres with a cutter. Then he got left-handed hitting Yoshida to hit a one-hopper to first baseman Spencer Torkelson, who was playing in on the grass.
Torkelson threw home, and the Tigers got the lead runner, Monasterio, out in a rundown.
Madden finished the inning by striking out Trevor Story with a 94-mph four-seamer.
The good times didn’t last.
The Red Sox lost the services of Roman Anthony in the second inning. He felt something in his right wrist during his first at-bat. The Red Sox called it right wrist discomfort.
