Detroit Tigers right-handed hitter Matt Vierling looked awkward Thursday, flailing at a strike-two outside slider thrown by Milwaukee relief pitcher Abner Uribe.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning at Comerica Park, slow-starting right-handed slugger Spencer Torkelson stepped into the batter's box expecting to experience more of the same.
For good reason. Entering Thursday, Uribe, a righty, had yet to surrender a hit off his slider to a right-handed hitter this season. Overall, he held opponents to a .133 batting average off his slider.
On his opening offering, Uribe released a 100-mph sinker, getting a called strike. The next three pitches were sliders, all called out of the strike zone. Uribe went away from the slider and attempted to sneak a 99-mph sinker by Torkelson, who connected on his first career walk-off home run, leading the Tigers to a 5-4 victory.
"That was an incredible feeling," Torkelson told Detroit SportsNet.
Torkelson attempted to deflect attention away from himself, including a unique 3-2-3 double play he initiated from a drawn-in position at first base. The play ended the Brewers' three-run inning off Tigers starter .

Torkelson also pointed out Jahmai Jones' pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning.
His game-clinching homer?
"That doesn't happen without (Jones') homer and without (pitcher Tyler Holton) coming in to get a double polay," he said.
Torkelson connected on his second homer of the season and second in two games. The 2020 No. 1 overall draft choice went 23 games before homering this season.
A 31-home run hitter in 2023 and '25, Torkelson had a similar powerless start two seasons ago. Then, it took him 41 games before hitting his second homer and the eighth-inning blast also proved to be a game-winner over the Miami Marlins.
"You've got to be ready for the moment," Torkelson said.
His moment developed when Uribe (1-1) decided not to throw a 3-1 slider.
