Dave McGinnis, longtime NFL coach and color commentator for the Tennessee Titans, passed away on April 13 at the age of 74 after battling an illness. Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk expressed deep sorrow over his loss, highlighting his impact on the organization and community.
The Tennessee Titans have announced the death of longtime NFL coach and Titans color commentator Dave McGinnis on April 13. McGinnis was 74.
"My heart aches with the loss of Coach Mac, who was so much more than a coach and broadcaster. He was family," Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement. "Coach Mac gave so much of himself to this organization over the years and his passion, loyalty and love for the Titans never wavered. He cared deeply about the people around him, and that kindness and authenticity left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.
"He held a very special place in our family, and his presence in our lives and within this franchise will never be forgotten. We will miss him dearly, and we will always be grateful for the legacy he leaves behind."
McGinnis died after a battle with an illness that sent him to the hospital in March, according to the Titans' announcement.
McGinnis was the team's radio color commentator from 2017 to 2025, working alongside Mike Keith for the first eight years of that run, then with Taylor Zarzour in 2025.
McGinnis coached linebackers for the Titans from 2004 to 2011, a role he served after a four-year stint as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals (2000-03). He was 17-40 as a head coach and worked 30 total years in the NFL, getting his start alongside former Titans coach Jeff Fisher with the Chicago Bears in the 1980s.
"Our hearts are broken," Titans CEO Burke Nihill said in a statement. "Coach Mac was a treasure. He poured his heart into everything he did: as a coach, a broadcaster and a mentor to so many. He taught generations of players and colleagues not just about football, but about toughness, integrity and how to carry yourself the right way.
"His passion for the Titans and love for the game came through in every interaction and every broadcast, and he had a unique way of making everyone around him better. He truly embodied what it means to be a Titan, and he will be deeply missed."
