During a recent interview with People Magazine, Amazon Prime Video's Thursday Night Football host and reporter Charissa Thompson shared her thoughts on Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's decision to continue playing and enter 2026 for a 14th NFL season.
"Was I surprised by it? No. I'm hopeful. I mean, the NFL is better when Travis is on the field," said Thompson. "I mean, obviously, as a person, as a player, everything he's done, I'm excited for him to have another year and make that decision with his friends, his family, and, of course, his fiancée (Taylor Swift)."
Kelce agreed to a 3-year, $54.735 million deal to return to the Chiefs that can be worth up to $57.735 million ($18.245 million average). The first year is $12 million plus 3 million in incentives. The expectation is that 2026 will be his final season in the league, with his assumed retirement draining his remaining cap hits over future years.
"And just being able to cover Travis, for now, the better part of almost two decades," said Thomoson, "it's been exciting, and I just love having him on the field and being able to watch him play and leave on his own terms."
Kelce enters 2026 third all-time behind Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten, and 2,126 yards behind Gonzalez for the most for a tight end in league history, with only 45 behind Witten in second place.
