McInnes, McGlynn and Naysmith nominated for SPFL manager of year
Derek McInnes, John McGlynn, and Gary Naysmith nominated for SPFL manager of the year!
A dedicated writer has joined The Only Colors (TOC) to cover Michigan State Spartans sports. The writer's passion for MSU began in childhood and has evolved through various experiences in college.
Nearly a year ago, as I wrapped up my first year as a college student, I sent an unprompted email to the TOC editorsâ address. I included my resume, and a brief message that sounded a little bit like this:
Growing up, I was the kid who didnât just wear his favorite teamâs gear but read up on every bit of information he could find about his Michigan State Spartans. Once my classmates and I first received our school computers in fifth grade or so, rather than find as many online videogames to play as I could, youâd find me paragraphs deep into previews, recaps, and opinion pieces about everything MSU.
The Only Colors was always my favorite site to explore. The sense of community, the passionate readers and writers, and, of course, constant hatred of that school down the road. I was hooked. As my favorite players shifted from guys like Josiah Price and Bryn Forbes to Felton Davis III and Matt McQuaid, and I made my way through high school and now college, I never quit following along with TOC.
So, when I got a call from (the one and only) O Basse who said that TOC could, in fact, use some help, I jumped at the opportunity. Since last August, I have had an absolute blast writing about everything from Spartan football film to incoming MSU basketball recruits, and running our new X account (@The_OnlyColors).
Why all this reflection? The time has come for a big change in my life. Some of you may recall that I have spent the last two years playing Division III college football at Case Western Reserve University, balancing playing quarterback for one team of Spartans, along with covering another Spartan team for TOC. (And last fall, I probably watched a comparable amount of film for both football teams- go check out my Film Room articles!!) I am immensely grateful for all of the wonderful memories made as a Case football player and student-athlete over the last two years. However, I have received an opportunity that I have dreamt about since well before my first time reading an article at The Only Colors.
In the coming weeks, I will finish up my final exams, then say farewell to CWRU. Beginning the summer of 2026, I will be transferring schools and starting as a Volunteer Student Assistant Coach⊠on the staff of Michigan State Football.
While I without a doubt will miss writing for TOC, I cannot wait to be a part of the Spartan football program, to walk the halls, and devote my love for football and knowledge of the game towards the team itself. I am more passionate than ever about restoring the program back to the standard that Michigan State Football demands, and getting our Spartans back to the proud tradition and national relevancy that I grew up with. Like Coach Fitzgerald said in one of his first team meetings, this will not be not a rebuild, it will be a rebirth.
With that said, I would like to first and foremost thank you, TOC Nation. Thank you for accepting a die-hard fan who happened to be a college student at a different institution into this outstanding community. Thank you for all of the kind comments, and all the critical ones. Thank you for giving me an opportunity to truly discover how much MSU Athletics means to me through this job, and how it just wouldnât be right if I spent all of my college years anywhere but on the Banks of the Red Cedar.
A huge thank you to my fellow writers: Steve, Mike, Robbie, and O. Thanks for being nothing but the absolute best people not only to work with, but to talk to about everything from sports to jobs to life with. Thank you for always being flexible and able to work around and work with my schedule, whether in or out of season. Our readers are in good hands. I hope we can give you many more exciting games to write about this fall!
I might not be writing for TOC any longer, but I am just getting started in my fight for The Only Colors. I hope you all enjoyed reading my articles as much as I enjoyed writing them. Go Green forever!
Thank you,
Lucas Holubar
From the editor: I want to say, first of all, a big thank you to Lucas Holubar. He always went above and beyond in his journalism. There were times I was expecting an article of five paragraphs from him, and then I would see that Lucas wrote an entire thesis paper complete with graphs and charts and researched data. And I know that his football season âFilm Roomâ articles were always a big hit with TOC Nation. So on behalf of the TOC staff, thanks for everything and best of luck in your next chapter. Oh, and have a great time being an MSU student.
Second, to TOC Nation, just a hunch, but I think it may be worthwhile for you all to remember Lucasâs name. I have a feeling this young man could make his way in the world of coaching football. And then you all can say you remember him when he was just getting started.
And lastly, with Lucasâs departure, we are going to be looking to bring on a new writer in August to help with football coverage. Specifically, I am looking for someone who would be able to continue the âFilm Roomâ articles each week, so you should have a very good knowledge of the Xâs and Oâs of the game and ideally even have experience doing film review. We will be able to teach you the technical side of how to create the graphics over a photo or video.
If you would be interested in joining the TOC team, please send an email to theonlycolorseditors@gmail.com.
