Miami Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan has signed Malik Willis as the starting quarterback and is considering drafting another QB in Rounds 3-5 of the upcoming NFL Draft. Sullivan emphasized the importance of long-term planning for the team's future.
Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has signed Malik Willis as the team's starting quarterback. And Quinn Ewers is, at minimum, a promising young backup.
But as the Dolphins approach the NFL Draft on Thursday April 23 to Saturday April 25, Sullivan is not excluding the possibility of drafting another quarterback.
"Less likely? I wouldn't say that," Sulivan said at the recent NFL annual meetings. "I think if it fell a certain way, I'm gonna do what I think is best for the Dolphins. I'm not saying the whole world would understand it, but sometimes you gotta do things to secure the long -term vision and health of an organization that maybe don't make sense to everybody else."
That's what happened when the Packers selected Aaron Rodgers, despite the presence of Brett Favre.
That's what happened when the Packers selected Jordan Love, despite the presence of Aaron Rodgers.
And yes, for the millionth time, Sullivan comes to Miami from Green Bay.
"Malik is our guy," Sullivan said. "Very happy with Quinn. I think Quinn will tell you he ain't going quietly. You know what I mean? I've had my own conversations with him. It's gonna be a healthy room. I think there'll be a very good mutual respect. They're both pros pros. There's gonna be a lot of really good competition in that room. I don't feel the pressure now that I did a month ago, if that makes sense. Six weeks ago, whatever it was. But you'd never say never."
You never say never when it comes to quarterback.
That said, it would seem more likely Miami would use one of its six picks in rounds 3, 4 or 5 to take a flier on a rookie quarterback, than one of their three picks in Rounds 1 or 2.
Here's a look at five potential Dolphins QB picks in Round 3-5 (or, maybe round 6)
Strengths: Prototypical size, rocket arm, decent movement.
Weaknesses: Inconsistent, lacked poise under pressure.
Fit: Allar is a wild card. The film isn't great, but the upside might be.

Strengths: Big-game experience, compact release, some mobility.
Weaknesses: Arm talent, deep ball, can get rattled under pressure.
Fit: Would be an intriguing backup battle with Ewers.
