All signs point toward the New England Patriots trading for A.J. Brown after June 1. ESPN's Adam Schefter began this week by basically confirming that the deal will happen -- and even reported the likely trade price.
So, what, if anything, would prevent the Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles from pulling off the trade?
Obviously, the Eagles could decide to trade Brown to another team. However, during a recent episode of his podcast, Boston Sports Journal's Greg Bedard floated another scenario: New England selecting a receiver early in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Factors such as contract negotiations or changes in team strategy could prevent the trade from happening.
Adam Schefter has reported a likely trade price for A.J. Brown, although specific figures were not disclosed in the article.
The optimal time for the Patriots to complete the trade is after June 1, as indicated by recent reports.

"If the Patriots draft a wide receiver at 31, arguably also in the second round, I think that takes them out of A.J. Brown," Bedard said. " ... You're gonna invest a first-round pick or trade up to get a wide receiver, you signed Romeo Doubs, and you're gonna get A.J. Brown? Sorry, I don't buy it!"
Bedard went one step further, saying the Patriots should draft a receiver instead of trading for Brown -- if the right prospect is available.
âIf I were the Patriots, and if I was in charge of the Patriots, I would much rather draft (Washington receiver) Denzel Boston at 31, than to go and get AJ Brown," Bedard said. "If Denzel Boston's on the board at 31, then take him and forget about AJ Brown. That's what I'm hoping that they do.â
The NFL Draft begins Thursday night, so we won't have to wait much longer to learn whether Bedard and the Patriots are on the same page.
