As we enter the month of May, some top prospects have already been called up across the league. A few of them have the potential to make an impact in fantasy baseball. Let’s hit the waiver wire and highlight five players to consider adding heading into Week 7 who are still available in the majority of Yahoo leagues.
The Rays entered the season without a clear closer. Baker was an unlikely option to earn the job, but it looks like he has done just that. He has appeared in 12 games, recording seven saves along the way. His 3.18 ERA is backed by an even better 2.22 xERA, and he is missing plenty of bats with his 28.3% strikeout rate. Saves aren’t always easy to find on the waiver wire, so don’t hesitate to add Baker if you need help in the category.
Schultz was one of the top prospects in the White Sox’s organization after the team selected him in the first round of the 2022 Draft. He worked his way up to Triple-A towards the end of last season, making five starts at the level. After making three appearances in the minors this year, the White Sox decided to call him up. His 14.3% walk rate through three starts in the majors is concerning, and he also had control issues in the minors. However, he also has a 28.6% strikeout rate and has given up just eight hits across 15 1/3 innings. He comes with significant upside, making him someone worth adding in 12-team and deeper leagues.
Bazzana was selected in the first round of the 2024 Draft by the Guardians. He began this year at Triple-A, showing good command of the strike zone with a 21.4% strikeout rate and a 17.9% walk rate. He also had eight stolen bases to go along with his .422 wOBA and .223 ISO. With the Guardians struggling to score runs, they have already called up Bazzana to try and provide a spark. Don’t expect a ton of home runs, but he has enough upside to be a viable option in 12-team and deeper leagues.
After thriving in the minors, Ballesteros played 20 games in the majors last year. He showed why the Cubs are so high on him, posting a .868 OPS. He has been even better this year, recording a 1.012 OPS over 27 games. His strikeout rate is only 15.2%, which is consistent with his stats in the minors. His 53.3% hard-hit rate is also encouraging for things to come. There may be no better option on the waiver wire among catchers.
Lee didn’t shine in any one department last season, finishing with eight home runs and 10 stolen bases to go along with his .320 wOBA. Still, he is a good contact hitter, evident by his career 11.1% strikeout rate. He is on a hot streak right now, hitting 27-for-69 (.391) with two home runs and five doubles over his last 18 games. The Giants have taken notice, recently giving him opportunities to bat leadoff. Although he’s not a must-roster player for the entire season, he’s worth adding right now to take advantage of his current hot streak.
Schultz, Bazzana, and Ballesteros are three young players to target on the waiver wire right now. Baker is also a viable option for those who need saves, while Lee’s hot streak has vaulted him back into the fantasy discussion.
