Top quarterback prospect Kamden Lopati has decommitted from Illinois, making him a key target for Michigan football as they seek to strengthen their 2027 recruiting class. Lopati, a four-star dual-threat quarterback from Salt Lake City, is now available for recruitment.
Michigan football recruiting has been in full swing, but despite a flurry of commitments at the outset of spring ball, Kyle Whittingham and the new staff have been working quietly.
One of the big priorities for the 2027 recruiting class has been quarterback, as longtime QB commit Peter Bourque departed the class in February. But Whittingham has particularly had his eye on one target, and he appears to be that much more gettable as of Monday.
The Wolverines have made no secret that they've coveted Salt Lake City (Utah) West four-star quarterback Kamden Lopati, the dual-threat signal caller who hailed from Whittingham's old backyard. But the problem was, he had long been committed to Illinois.
Not anymore, it seems. As he backed off his pledge from the Illini on Monday.
Here is the scouting report on Lopati from 247Sports' Andrew Ivins:
-Savvy dual-threat quarterback that excels as a vertical passer and a power runner in a spread attack.-Built almost like a linebacker and measured just under 6-foot-3, 225 pounds in advance of senior year.-Can get the ball out fast with a smooth 3/4 release.-Likes to use touch when looking deep.-Will hit his first read and keep an offense on schedule, but tends to make some of his best tosses when working off-script as he constantly extends plays with his short-area quickness and pocket awareness.-Dangerous on the scramble and is the type of number that defenses have to account for in the RPO game with his vision and creativity.-Projects as a potential Power Four starter that can thrive in a system that wants to capitalize on his mobility.
Lopati recently visited Ann Arbor and has gotten five predictions on Rivals (Steve Wiltfong, Adam Gorney, Greg Smith, Ethan McDowell, and Josh Henschke) that he will end up wearing maize and blue once it's all said and done.
Rated highest by ESPN, Lopati comes in as the No. 50 prospect in the country, regardless of position.
