April 17 (UPI) -- Faith Torrez overcame an injury-plagued season to win the NCAA gymnastics all-around title, shocking the Fort Worth, Texas, crowd, including herself.
The Oklahoma Sooners senior, who placed third in the all-around standings last year, posted a 9.9375 on the vault, 9.9500 on uneven bars, 9.9500 on balance beam and 9.9500 in the floor exercise to total 39.7875 at Dickies Arena.
LSU's Kailin Chio (39.6125) placed second in the all-around standings. Florida's eMjae Frazier (39.5625) placed third.
"If you would have asked me 2 1/2 weeks ago, I had no intention of doing the all-around this meet," Torrez said on the ESPN broadcast. "But it was great. It kinda just happened the way it happened. And it happened perfectly."
Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles won the floor exercise national crown with a score of 9.9750, just ahead of Chio's 9.9625. Stanford's Ana Barbosu, who was awarded with a bronze medal initially won by Chiles at the 2024 Summer Olympics before the American's score was overturned, tied for 13th Thursday in Fort Worth.
Torrez, who dealt with an ankle injury and didn't compete in the all-around during the regular season, placed third in the floor exercise.
Sooners junior Keira Wells won the vault title, with a score of 9.750. Chio, the defending vault champion, and LSU Tigers teammate Kaliya Lincoln tied for second. Torrez tied teammate Elle Mueller and Arkansas' Allison Cucci for sixth on the vault.
Torrez tied Chiles, Barbosu and LSU's Konnor McClain for second on the balance beam, behind champion Brooklyn Rowray of Minnesota.
Florida's Riley McCusker won the uneven bars (9.9875) title. Chiles, who won the event in 2023 and 2025, fell off during the opening rotation and placed last. Torrez tied for fifth in that event.
Oklahoma, Minnesota, UCLA and Arkansas advanced to the national championship, which will be Saturday at Dickies Arena. The Sooners won six of the last nine titles. They shared the podium with second-place UCLA and third-place Missouri in 2025.
The women's national championship will air at 4 p.m. EDT Saturday on ABC and ESPN+.
Championship qualifiers for the men's gymnastics championships will be held Friday at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill. The men's finals, which will be held at the same venue, will air at 7 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2.
