NEW YORK â The Big Sleep picked the perfect night to wake up, as Trent Grishamâs two home runs helped the New York Yankees snap a five-game losing streak with an 11-10 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.
With the Bombers swept in Tampa Bay over the weekend, the center fielder tied the game at 10 with a two-run shot off Angels closer Jordan Romano in the ninth. José Caballero then put the finishing touches on a back-and-forth affair, doubling, stealing third and scoring on a walk-off wild pitch.
Earlier, in the fifth frame, Grisham pinch-hit for Randal Grichuk and belted a three-run homer, his first of the year, to give the Yankees a 7-4 lead. It was a the first massive moment of the evening for the veteran, who entered the game with a .133 average despite some strong quality of contact metrics.
Momentum quickly shifted â a theme throughout the game â when Mike Trout clapped back with his own three-run bomb off Jake Bird in the sixth. Aaron Judge responded with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning, only for Josh Lowe to tie the game at eight with a sac fly off Bird in the seventh and for Trout to add a two-run, go-ahead homer off Camilo Doval in the eighth.
Fortunately for the Yankees, Grisham helped the Yankees overcome a bullpen that allowed six earned runs.
So did Judge, who also launched a 116.2-mph, 456-foot moonshot for a two-run dinger off the left-handed Yusei Kikuchi in the first inning. Caballero added a two-run homer of his own in the second after fouling a ball off his foot, though his shoddy defense in the fourth initiated the teeter-tottering that occurred on Monday night.
The shortstop opened that inning with his third error of the season. Two batters later, Jorge Soler ripped an RBI double with one away. Yankees starter Will Warren followed with a strikeout, but Jo Adell and Logan OâHoppe sandwiched RBI singles around a walk. Fernando Cruz then replaced Warren, only to walk the first two hitters he faced. The latter forced a run in and knotted the game.
Warren totaled 32/3 innings, three hits, four runs, zero earned, one walk and six strikeouts.
Ideally, the pinstripers will get better pitching from their staff on Tuesday, starting with Ryan Weathers, who is fresh off an eight-inning gem. Reid Detmers, another southpaw, will take the mound for the Angels.
