The Boston Red Sox’ mass firing of their coaching staff left the MLB stunned, their players especially. Of their players, veteran Trevor Story was one of the most angry.
Because of that, Story has been vocal, and indirectly calling out the front office for their handling of the firings. With that in mind, Story’s future in Boston may be up in the air.
Just as previously stated, Story was pretty upset. CBS Sports Julian McWilliams revealed that Story was one of the few players to break down in tears upon hearing the news. When approached by the media, he made himself heard.
“If this shows us anything, it’s we’re here to play baseball, and that’s it. We don’t make decisions. We don’t have any input on that…It’s kind of up in the air what the true direction of the franchise is,” (via The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum).

According to McWilliams, these clashes between Breslow and Cora actually seemed to start with Story, as the front office thought he was past his prime.,
“The disconnect on the field circles back to Story. There were those in the organization who believed Story was past his prime and no longer capable of being an everyday impact player,” McWilliams wrote.
McWilliams also noted that even with a good finish to 2025 by Story, the front office wasn’t convinced. In his time with Boston, Story has slashed .243/.296/.405/.702 with 72 doubles, 48 home runs, and 203 RBI in 347 games.
These numbers were much worse than his Colorado Rockies days, so the front office may have been right on that front.
Overall, Story might be on the first train out, either by his own decision or the front offices. He could ask for a trade, but his worth is not very much at the moment, due to an expensive contract for a sluggish start to 2026 and low overall production in Boston.
Story is also the team’s de facto leader, with the roster primarily made up of young stars, and people who haven’t been in Boston for more than a couple years. Hopefully, the two sides can reconcile, and the Sox and Story both find a way to bounce back.
