Trevor Story gave the Boston Red Sox an encouraging sign in Sunday's 9-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
In his best game of the season, Story went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. The shortstop entered Sunday with four hits all month, and he hadn't tallied more than one in any game this season.
Story began the 2026 campaign as Boston's No. 2 hitter after notching 25 home runs in a bounce-back year. However, the veteran quickly dropped to the bottom half of Alex Cora's batting order by batting .131 (8-for-61) with one walk and 21 strikeouts through 14 games.
The two-time Silver Slugger showed signs of life on Sunday by singling in his first three plate appearances. After grounding out in the seventh, Story expanded Boston's lead with a two-run double in the ninth.
Story reflected on a big day for himself and the Red Sox, who took two out of three games for the second straight series after starting 2-7.
"Feels good," Story told reporters after the game, "Especially getting the series win today after losing the first game. Showed some toughness there, for sure, as a team. Personally, it's nice to see some results. 'Cause we've been working, and it's good to see that show up."
Cora said Story returned to a simple philosophy to get back on track.
"Swinging at strikes and using the whole field," Cora said. "That's what he did last year, and he knows he needs to get back to that, and then big things are gonna happen. But right now, it's kind of the humble approach. Just hit the ball the other way, take what they give you and keep moving forward."
Story and the Red Sox will look to carry their momentum into a three-game road series against the Minnesota Twins starting on Monday at 7:40 p.m. ET.
