"I saw it to my right and I saw that (Fortes) was going to third," Story said. "I thought for a split second I should get him out, and it kinda took my focus off the ball a little bit. Itās on me."
Following the scoring change, Story has now gone 21 games without an error. Boston's 36 Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) comfortably represents MLB's best rate ahead of the runner-up Los Angeles Dodgers (24).
Yet the blunder put Boston behind 3-0, and the Red Sox fell to 17-23 after dropping two of three games against their American League East rival.
"It shows that itās tough to win in this league making mistakes like that," Story said. "Canāt happen. Youāve seen the way we can play when we are playing good defense. Itās a strong suit of ours this year. That oneās on me, and I have to clean that one up."
Meanwhile, Story's struggles at the plate continue. The 33-year-old has followed a bounce-back campaign by batting .200/.236/.284 with two home runs and a 33.3 strikeout percentage.
Story believes he'll turn the corner as he did when recovering from a .432 OPS in May last year.
"Itās tough to go through in the moment," Story said. "I have confidence I can do it because Iāve done it before. Itās very similar to last year. Takes one game, takes one pitch and Iām always optimistic about it. Iām not gonna sit here and pout about it or sit here and feel sorry for myself."
