Perhaps the best encapsulation of Fort Wayne (Indiana) Northrop class of 2027 defensive end Ifeanyi Emedobi as a prospect was last August in his first-ever padded scrimmage as a football player.
Emedobi used his exceptional natural foot speed to explode into the backfield. Then, not understanding quarterbacks are non-contact in a scrimmage, he tackled the opposing quarterback. After the opposing offensive linemen let him know they did not appreciate that, Emedobi’s coaches explained to him that the quarterback was not to be tackled.

The next two plays, he blew into the backfield again, letting up before tackling the quarterback, though.
That is Emedobi. Last season was his first season ever playing football. He recorded a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash at Rivals’ Nashville Camp, though, and that kind of speed and explosiveness have him approaching 30 scholarship offers one year after being talked into trying football.
When Michigan offered a scholarship, he had to have aspects of the school and football program that are very well known to most people explained to him.
“Last year was his first year play and his first year watching,” Northrop defensive coordinator Kalen Desrosiers said. “His dad Sam played at Northrop and was an all-state guy in the early 2000s. He played at Eastern Michigan. Sam stopped playing when he had Ife. He had him in college. Ife helped him out with his business. He’s into technology, video games — he was very athletic but didn’t play any sports.”
The Emedobis moved around some, but eventually ended up back in Fort Wayne. Ifeanyi enrolled at Northrop. That is when Desrosiers kept hearing from students there was a new kid throwing down dunks in gym class. He went down, met the young man and told him he could have a future in football.
Desrosiers is also part of TractionAP, a training facility in Fort Wayne that has had many Division I athletes come through its doors. Emedobi began training there and at the school.
“He started in late March, so he was training and working out then three to four months, it’s the season,” Desrosiers said.
Desrosiers worked on Emedobi’s running form. He was fast, but he did not have proper technique. It was decided that defensive end would be a good place for him to start, so Desrosiers sent him videos of and told him that is how he needed to be.

During his first padded scrimmage, Emedobi showcased his foot speed but mistakenly tackled the quarterback, leading to a coaching lesson about non-contact rules.
Emedobi demonstrated exceptional natural foot speed and the ability to penetrate the backfield effectively.

Before long, the Northrop staff knew they had something.
He was fast, coachable and also liked contact.
When Michigan asked him what his favorite part of football was, Emedobi said he liked the hitting. That was the right answer.
The Wolverines offered and now are expected to get an official visit. He is reshuffling his thoughts with Michigan and Virginia Tech offering this week. Indiana, Minnesota, Penn State, Nebraska, Notre Dame and others have offered.
“He’s relying a lot on me and rest of staff, and his dad to help him navigate recruiting,” Desrosiers said. “We had to have a conversation with him about who Michigan is and what they do. He truly doesn’t know. It’s not an arrogance thing, he just doesn’t know. People grow up dreaming of this and he didn’t care about football until halfway through last season when he realized, ‘This is fun and I’m good at it.’ So we are trying our best to hit as many schools as possible, get on the phone, talk to coaches and dwindle down the list.”
Not only did Emedobi run 4.48 at Rivals, he vertical jumped 37 inches and recorded a 10-6 broad jump. He ran around, and even through, some 320-pound offensive linemen. All this for a kid who is still very much learning on the fly.
“It is just the tip of the iceberg right now,” Desrosiers said. “He’s never had any fear. The one thing we have never had to question was his effort.”
Emedobi ranks the No. 7 rising senior in Indiana, per Rivals.
Michigan coaches continue to hit the road.
They were back in their old stomping grounds, the state of Utah, this week and extended an offer to Orem High’s Maui Tonata, a 6-foot-5, 305-pound four-star.
Stanford, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, UCLA, Miami (Florida) and others have offered.
Michigan also offered Chantilly (Virginia) Westfield receiver Malachi Lee, an athletic 6-foot-2, 185-pound pass catcher who is also a basketball standout. He had nearly 1,000 yards receiving a year ago.
Wisconsin, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Pitt and others have also offered Lee.
