Joe Ryan is on track to make his next start after experiencing elbow soreness. Imaging showed no structural damage, and he successfully threw a bullpen session on Wednesday.
WASHINGTON D.C. â It seemed unlikely when Joe Ryan walked off the Target Field mound in the first inning on Sunday with elbow soreness that he would be available to make his next start.
But Ryan immediately had imaging taken that did not show any structural damage, and everything has felt good since that point. On Wednesday, he cleared another hurdle, throwing a bullpen, and now heâs on track to start Saturday in Cleveland, a truly best-case scenario for the Twins.
âThatâs the word,â Ryan said. âGo out there and go strike some guys out.â
Ryan tested things out on Tuesday, playing catch at Nationals Park. On Wednesday, he walked away from his bullpen pleased with the results and how he felt.
âIt felt good. Velos were good,â Ryan said. âAll offspeed stuff was working well. It felt nice. ⊠I would say like maybe just less reps this week, but stuff is better than itâs been in the bullpen. So it was good.â
The Twins will be making an addition to their bullpen in the coming days after acquiring Yoendrys GĂłmez from Tampa Bay on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. GĂłmez, 26, had been designated for assignment by the Rays after compiling a 6.23 earned-run average through his first 17 1/3 innings this season.
âItâs a big arm,â manager Derek Shelton said. âItâs a guy we saw in spring training a couple times. We really liked him. But it just adds some velocity to our bullpen.
Shelton said they expect to add GĂłmez to the 26-man roster over the next couple of days, at which point they will make a roster move.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Twins have designated right-handed pitcher Christian Roa for assignment. Roa was acquired off waivers from the Houston Astros on April 23.
The Twinsâ highest-paid player this season â Pablo LĂłpez â was ruled out before the season even began. Now, so is the player who will earn the third-highest amount from the Twins this season.

That would be Houston infielder Carlos Correa, whom the Twins traded at the deadline last July to shed salary. As part of that, the Twins agreed to cover around 1/3 of Correaâs salary over the final three seasons of his contract.
Correa suffered a left ankle surgery while taking batting practice on Tuesday. He confirmed Wednesday that he needed season-ending surgery, which means he will not face off against his former Twins teammates later this month at Target Field when the Astros come to town.
Correa had a highly-publicized ankle injury that caused two teams â the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets â to balk at his physical when he went through free agency ahead of the 2023 season. Because of that, he wound up back with the Twins on a six-year deal. The prior injury that raised alarms was to his right ankle.
Zak Kentâs wild journey has taken him to Washington D.C. The reliever, who was a member of the Cleveland Guardians, St. Louis Cardinals (twice) and Texas Rangers organizations this offseason, was claimed off waivers by the Twins in February and made the Opening Day roster. He was optioned to Triple-A on April 5 and DFAâd on April 28. He latched on with the Nationals and on Wednesday, he was called up and in uniform against his former team. ⊠Simeon Woods Richardson (0-5, 6.49 ERA) is scheduled to face Jake Irvin (1-4, 4.93 ERA) in the series finale on Thursday. Irvin is a Bloomington native and graduated from Bloomington Jefferson.
