Joe Gibbs grandson, Ty Gibbs, is officially a NASCAR Cup Series winner, claiming his first win in Bristolās Food City 500 in his 131st start.
The decision to stay out following Chase Elliottās spin with 23 laps to go gave Gibbs the lead. He was able to hold off the two most dominant drivers of the afternoon, Ryan Blaney and Kyle Larson, both on fresher tires.
Prior to Elliottās spin, Gibbs was gaining on Blaney, who took the lead from stage-sweeping Larson after rebounding from two poor pit stops in the closing stage.
Larson and Blaney, who both lead huge chunks of the race, went to the pit, with only 13 cars on the lead lap. The first- and third-running cars were two of the only leaders to pit, Larson for two tires and Blaney for four.
Larson beat Blaney off pit road with the two-tire call. The final 30 laps turned into a battle of old tires vs new, and Larson and Blaney made it back to the front to battle Gibbs and Tyler Reddick.
Blaney was battling Gibbs for the lead with six laps remaining when Riley Herbst ended up in the wall after being spun by Kyle Busch while running 21st.
The caution triggered an overtime finish where Gibbs chose the top line, sending Blaney to his preferred bottom line. Gibbs had a strong run at the wave of the green flag and held on in the top lane. Gibbs was able to hold on while battling the two champions for his first Cup Series win following a strong start to his third full season on his Grandfatherās team.
Gibbs beat Blaney to the line by 0.055 seconds, the closest margin of victory at Bristol since 1991, according to NASCAR Insights on X.
Gibbs was more excited about the racing he experienced in the closing laps than the outcome, battling with the new veterans of the sport cleanly and putting on a show for the fans.
"Honestly, I didn't really know care if I was going to win or not," Gibbs told Fox Sports "I thought the race was awesome. I thought we were all put on. The race was great. I feel like it's been like us the whole year, so I really appreciate always racing Ryan Blaney and Kyle, too. Those guys always run me really well. We all run really good together and hard, so hopefully we put on a great show for the fans."
Fox's Jaime Little interviewed Joe Gibbs following his grandson's first win, which he called one of his 'best experiences.'
As Joe was talking about his team, family, and late sons, Ty ran into the frame to hug his grandfather and dedicate his post-race exuberance to his grandfather's work ethic at JGR.
"This is the man right here," Ty said as he hugged his grandfather. "I've never seen so many who work hard in my life. He and my mom. I come to the shop at 6:00 AM or 7:00 PM, or when everybody's there, and they're not there, they're always there. They work their asses off. I really appreciate it. This is a great role model."
