Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points but turned the ball over six times in the Sixers' 108-102 loss to the Knicks. He struggled with defensive pressure and a jammed finger that affected his confidence.
NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia 76ers had their chances in Game 2 against the New York Knicks on Wednesday night. They battled all night long despite not having Joel Embiid due to hip and ankle issues and held a lead in the fourth, but they went cold as they shot 4-for-19 in the fourth as the Knicks earned a 108-102 win to send Philadelphia to an 0-2 hole in the series.
The Sixers received a solid game from Tyrese Maxey who poured in 26 points, but he shot just 9-for-23 and turned the ball over six times. Obviously, without Embiid on the floor, the Knicks are going to pay a ton of defensive attention to Maxey and try to make him give up the basketball. New York sent a ton of blitzes and traps his way in an effort to speed him up a bit.
Maxey did the best he could, but he was unable to really figure it out. It also didn't help that he jammed his finger, which he confirmed was the same one that caused him to miss three weeks in March.
"I jammed my finger in the second quarter," Maxey explained. "I didn't feel confident dribbling around a lot of the traps like I normally do, or splitting them, so I was trying to get off the ball and, like, trying to create actions, but that's fine. They can put two on the ball. I’m fine with that, but I just gotta get more comfortable making the reads. I turned the ball over way, way, way too much tonight, especially out of the traps, and I gotta do a better job of just staying poised in those traps and make the right play out of it."
With that being said, one has to wonder if the turnover issues were caused by the Knicks or by Maxey himself as he works his way through the problems heading into Game 3 on Friday.
"A little bit me. A little bit of both," Maxey added. "They did a good job of, like, kind of taking away certain passes that I like to make when I get trapped, and then it was a couple times we didn't just execute our trap offense. The trap came and then I tried to advance pass it and the advance guy didn't come up, and then now I'm stuck in the air, and I gotta do a better job with just dragging it out and being more poised."
Tyrese Maxey acknowledged he turned the ball over too much and needs to stay poised when facing defensive traps.
The Sixers lost 108-102, falling to an 0-2 deficit in the series despite holding a lead in the fourth quarter.
Tyrese Maxey jammed his finger in the second quarter, which affected his confidence in handling the ball.
The Knicks concentrated their defensive efforts on Maxey due to Joel Embiid's absence from the game.

If there is one thing about Tyrese Maxey, he is going to figure it out. He is one of the smartest, hard working players in the league, and he has been able to face any challenge and overcome all of that with toughness. This figures to be no different. One has to believe there will be lots of film sessions and talks with coaches and teammates in an effort to be better going forward.
"They trapped me aggressively," Maxey finished. "You know what I'm saying? They, like, really, really trapped me. It wasn't like a soft trap. So, like when they trapped me, they trapped me, and it was my fault a couple of those times. A lot of those times, and I'll be better with that."
