Mainoo's winner for Man Utd sees off Liverpool comeback
Kobbie Mainoo's late strike gives Manchester United a thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool!
The Philadelphia 76ers eliminated the Boston Celtics in Game 7 and will face the New York Knicks in Round 2. Tyrese Maxey anticipates a competitive series, recalling their close matchup in 2024.
BOSTON -- The Philadelphia 76ers finished the job in Round 1 against the Boston Celtics. The Sixers completed a historic rally from being down 3-1 and eliminated their heated rival 109-100 in Game 7 on Saturday.
With the Celtics vanquished, the Sixers now turn their attention to the New York Knicks in Round 2 beginning with Game 1 on Monday. This is a rematch of a 2024 Round 1 series when the Knicks eliminated the Sixers 4-2 in a razor thin series. The final margin in scoring across the six games was just 650-649 in favor of New York and Tyrese Maxey and Co. are expecting an equally as close matchup.
"I mean, that was what, two years ago?" Maxey said after the Game 7 win in Boston. "So, it's in the past, and it definitely didn't feel good at the time being. It was a very competitive series. I think we ended up losing 4-2, but the margin was like, minus-1 or something like that. It was really close. So I expect nothing less. I expect nothing less, man, actually, more. That was a first-round matchup. This is a second-round matchup. So I think both teams are going to come out there and be extremely competitive."
The Sixers in that 2024 series had to start Kyle Lowry in the backcourt next to Maxey. While still helpful, Lowry wasn't producing at the level VJ Edgecombe is right now. The rookie guard had some big performances against the Knicks in the regular season and will now look to carry that over into this series.
The Sixers won 109-100, completing a historic comeback from a 3-1 deficit.

"They're a really great team," Edgecombe said of the Knicks. "A really great team, and, obviously, they played together for a minute. They have good chemistry. They play hard, but you know, we just gotta go in there and we gotta do the same thing. Match their energy, match their intensity. Just may the best team win."
The Sixers did not have the healthiest version of Joel Embiid in that series against the Knicks. The big fella was coming off a left knee procedure that kept him sidelined for quite some time during the season before returning to help Philadelphia. Not only the knee issue, but he was also dealing with Bell's Palsy at the time.
"New York, played them a couple years ago," Embiid stated. "Good series. Ended up in six. I had a lot going on at that time, so hopefully everything is good this time. So, I'm excited. We got a much better team than we had at that time. So it's going to be a fun series."
With that being said, Embiid did have a message for Philadelphia fans as he does not want a repeat of 2024 when Knicks fans invaded Xfinity Mobile Arena in droves in a New York City takeover.
Embiid stated:
"I just have a message for our fans. Last time we played the Knicks, it felt like this was Madison Square Garden east. So we all need the support. Don't sell your tickets. This is bigger than you. We need you guys. The atmosphere that we've had the last couple of games in Philly, especially the last one, pushing it to Game 7. I mean, we need all of it. I don't care if it's 70-30. It's Knicks fans. They travel and they're going to buy tickets, and there's gonna be some people that need the money, and probably sell tickets, but don't do it. We need you guys. We got a pretty good chance. We’re gonna need your support. We all need them to be extremely loud, and if you need money, I got you."
The Sixers and the Knicks will tip off at 8 p.m. EDT on Monday in Game 1 of Round 2.
