When Alex Grinch stepped into the role of defensive coordinator at UCF last year, he quickly emphasized to his players the critical need to generate turnovers.
The Knights, however, struggled to create turnovers last season, finishing 12th in the Big 12 with only 14 takeaways. That, in turn, led the team to lose the turnover battle in eight of its 12 games, finishing 5-7.
As a new season begins, Grinch’s message about the importance of creating turnovers remains unchanged.
“That’s something that wins and loses football games,” said Grinch. “Unfortunately, we found out the latter of the two, which is why we lost more games last year than we won, because we didn’t get enough takeaways.
“Can we play okay defensively and still find a way to get a win, but not get takeaways? We tried that and it didn’t work. So, the message for our guys is and it’s not a suggestion and it’s not extra credit, it’s something that is a rally cry in spring ball.”
The message is clear and it’s been echoed throughout the defensive roster.
New defensive backs coach David Overstreet II has also been stressing the importance of taking the ball away. It’s something he believes should be on every player’s mind when they step onto the football field.
“The most important thing in the field of that ball. Nothing matters without that football,” said Overstreet. “They (opposing team) can’t score if they ain’t got the ball. When you watch tape, you say, ‘You see this guy running by you right here? You tagged off. You really could punch the ball right here.’
“It’s constantly telling the guys where they can get the ball and how they can get the ball.”

“He’s very big on takeaways. That’s his number one thing: takeaways,” senior cornerback Antione Jackson said of Overstreet.

Turnovers play a crucial role in success in college football, as demonstrated by this past season’s College Football Playoff. Nine of the 12 playoff teams posted positive turnover margins, led by Indiana (+22), which would go on to capture the national championship. Six of the 12 teams ranked among the top 40 in total takeaways.
UCF finished the season ranked 97th in turnover margin and 91st in takeaways.
As a unit, UCF’s defense finished the season ranked in the top half of the Big 12 in several crucial defensive categories, including passing defense (3rd), total defense (4th) and scoring defense (7th).
However, the Knights must replace 40% of their production on defense, including losing six of their top 10 tacklers in the offseason. That includes five starters: defensive ends Malachi Lawrence and Nyjalik Kelly, defensive tackle John Walker, linebacker Cole Kozlowski and safety Phillip Dunnam.
The good news for Grinch is that the unit returns plenty of experience led by middle linebacker Lewis Carter, who was the team’s top tackler with 92 tackles.
“I’m a Lewis Carter fan,” said Grinch. “He’s a football-playing dude and I’m excited no one can steal [him] from us now. He plays the game the right way. He runs, he hits, he leads, he does just about everything at the level in which you want it.”
The defense also returns starters such as tackle RJ. Jackson Jr., nickel Braeden Marshall, cornerbacks Jayden Bellamy and Antione Jackson and safety Demari Henderson.
Then there are contributors like tackle Horace Lockett Jr., ends Isaiah Nixon and Sincere Edwards and cornerback DJ Bell, plus transfers such as linebackers Tackett Curtis and Jahleel Culbreath, ends Bruno Dall and Ken Tally, tackles Josh Schell and Brad Gurley and safeties Kahmel Johnson, Ty Bartrum and Matt Irwin.
Nineteen of the 43 defensive players on this season’s roster have spent at least two seasons with the Knights.
Yet, even the newcomers understand the importance of creating turnovers.
“That’s not negotiable. We gotta get that ball. We gotta get that ball out. That’s how you win games,” said edge rusher Ken Talley, who spent last season at Arkansas. “I wasn’t here last year, so I can’t speak on that, but I know we’re going to take that ball away.”
