On Wednesday, reports emerged that UConn football has agreed to a home-and-home series with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for the 2028 and 2029 seasons. The two teams last met in 2013 as conference rivals.
The Huskies are set to host the Scarlet Knights on Sept. 9, 2028, and will visit SHI Stadium in Piscataway, NJ, on Sept. 8, 2029. UConn offensive coordinator Nunzio Campanile is a former Rutgers assistant coach.
This will mark a reunion for the two programs, as they clashed as members of the Big East Conference for over a decade and in the American Athletic Conference for one year before Rutgers departed for the Big Ten. They played 13 times as FBS opponents, with UConn holding a 6-7 record. The Scarlet Knights lead the overall rivalry, 22-11, in a series dating back to 1940.
UConn got the last laugh, however. In their last meeting, the Huskies defeated Rutgers 28-17 at Rentschler Field. Since that 2013 game, Rutgers has had one eight-win season and two seven-win seasons and has otherwise been below .500.
The Scarlett Knights are currently led by Greg Schiano, who returned to Rutgers in 2020 after coaching there from 2001 to 2011. He is 31-41 in his six seasons since returning.
UConn will host Rutgers on September 9, 2028, and visit them on September 8, 2029.
Rutgers leads the overall rivalry with a record of 22-11 against UConn, who holds a 6-7 record in their FBS matchups.
The series marks a reunion of two programs that were once conference rivals in the Big East and American Athletic Conference, highlighting their historical rivalry.
