Cub Swanson went out with a victory. Convincingly.
The 42-year-old UFC veteran won his retirement fight Saturday with a complete demolition of Nate Landwehr in the first round at UFC 327. Swanson regularly landed headshots against his overmatched opponent, all the way up to the one that made referee Herb Dean jump in.
Swanson immediately laid down his gloves, then watched the UFC’s prepared tribute video for a professional career that dates back to 2004.
“I’ve been doing this a long time,” Swanson said in his post-fight interview. “I’m terrified every time I come out here, but I try to be brave and just focus. I was so proud I was able to accomplish that tonight.”
It was the best possible way for a fighter to go out. It was also Swanson’s 16th win as a UFC featherweight, the third-most in history behind Max Holloway (20) and Darren Elkins (18).
The fight officially closes the book on not just Swanson’s career, but the legacy of the now-defunct World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). Swanson was the final WEC alum remaining on the UFC roster, a throwback to a different era of MMA.
