It didn’t appear that Khamzat Chimaev weighed in like everyone else during Friday’s early morning weigh ins for UFC 328 in Newark, New Jersey, and UFC fighters took immediate notice. In fact, some are even calling for changes to the weigh ins procedure following what many consider to be a controversial trip to the scale.
Chimaev, who never has an easy weight cut before a fight, reportedly needed to lose an alarming 46 pounds for his middleweight title defense this weekend against hungry rival Sean Strickland. This is according to UFC lightweight contender, Arman Tsarukyan, who is one of Khamzat’s main training partners. If that’s true then it was always going to be difficult for Chimaev to successfully hit 185 pounds on weigh in day.
Sure enough, Chimaev was the last fighter to step on stage for Friday’s weigh ins and looked like absolute hell while he stood there. The New Jersey State Athletic Commission was on hand to check the scale and quickly confirmed that Chimaev clocked in at 185 pounds. Upon further review, it appeared that the commission didn’t allot enough time for the scale to settle to get an accurate reading, which may have ended in a weight miss for the UFC middleweight champ. This left some UFC fighters to cry foul play and accuse Khamzat of getting special treatment.
Khamzat Chimaev's weigh-in raised eyebrows as he appeared to struggle and was the last to weigh in, leading to accusations of special treatment and scale inaccuracies.

Fighters are demanding changes due to concerns over the accuracy of the weigh-in scales, particularly after the issues observed during Chimaev's weigh-in.

Other UFC fighters took to social media to suggest a potential change in how weight is calculated during weigh ins. Instead of using a tip scale they are suggesting UFC officials and athletic commissions switch to a digital scale. After all,, that is what fighters use in the back to test their weight before coming out for the official weigh in.

“I can solve all the weigh in conspiracy’s! Have everyone weigh on digital scales with the weight plastered on every screen. You’re welcome,” wrote UFC flyweight veteran Tim Elliott.
“Absolutely ridiculous we use a digital scale in the back just to jump on a tip scale,” chimed in former UFC bantamweight champion and current featherweight contender Aljamain Sterling.
“As soon as he steps on the scale, they say 185. It didn’t even have time to balance… This is a hang scale. You have to let it balance,” said former UFC fighter Dustin Poirier.
