UH softball’s McGaughey earns Big West award

The Big West on Monday honored University of Hawaii third baseman Jamie McGaughey as its Field Player of the Week.

The junior batted .600 over the weekend as the Rainbow Wahine swept UC Riverside to close out the regular season. She had three home runs and a double among her six hits, scored six runs and drove in four.

The award was McGaughey’s second.

The Rainbow Wahine next play Thursday in the Big West Championship tournament. UH has a bye as the second seed and faces the winner of Wednesday’s game between third seed UC Santa Barbara and sixth seed UC San Diego.

Isle players among PWC softball honorees

Six players for Hawaii colleges were honored Monday when the All-Pacific West Conference softball teams were announced — three from Hawaii Hilo, two from Chaminade and one from Hawaii Pacific.

UHH outfielder Lexie Tilton was named Defensive Player of the Year and teammate Janessa Santos made the first team as a pitcher. Voting was done by conference coaches.

Tilton was on the second team along with outfield mate Rayna White. They were joined by Chaminade catcher Summer Buck and utility player Gabriella Schneider. Shortstop Taryn Hirano of HPU was named third team.

The PacWest Player of the Year was Kendall Nakano and the Pitcher of the Year was DJ Symonds, both of Biola. Concordia’s Morgan Kneubuhler the Newcomer of the Year, Biola’s Lizzie Byer the Freshman of the Year and CUI’s Crystal Rosenthal the Coach of the Year.

UHH freshman Saucedo gets PWC honor

The Pacific West Conference on Monday named Hawaii Hilo freshman Blake Saucedo its Pitcher of the Week in baseball.

Saucedo shut out visiting Hawaii Pacific on six hits Friday in the Vulcans’ 3-0 win. He walked two batters and hit four. He struck out seven.

Chaminade men in fourth place after day 1

Chaminade’s men’s golf team is in fourth place after day one at the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship in West Palm Beach, Fla.

The Silverswords shot a 305 Monday at the par-71 The Park course, leaving them nine shots behind first-round leader Morehouse. Six teams are competing in the three-day event.

Chaminade’s top golfers were Riley Born and Tanner Capik, who are tied for eighth with Morehouse’s Izaiah Stewart after opening-round 74s that left them six strokes behind Joe Cunningham of Morehouse and Jacob Alcorta of Western New Mexico.

The Golf Channel will televise the second round today, starting at 10 a.m.
