Cedar Ridge coach Daryl Reeves will be sporting his bleached hair for a little while longer.
Promising to join his players in the hair color if they made history by reaching the third round of the playoffs, Reeves kept his word by dying it earlier this week.
But after the Raiders beat Johnson 2-0 Friday at Vandegrift to complete a sweep in a Class 6A Division I regional semifinal series, Reeves and Cedar Ridge will keep the distinct look as long as the Raiders keep being clutch in the postseason.
âWe usually do (temporary) tattoos in the first round, but we knew we had something special this year,â Raiders senior outfielder Kai Rice said. âSo as a group, we decided to make the commitment (to bleach hair).â
Cedar Ridge was certainly special on the mound Friday.
Luke Irwin and Bryson Batton combined for the shutout, with Irwin scattering four hits and striking out four in five innings to provide a spectacular start.
âEverything was working tonight,â said Irwin, who only yielded one walk. âIâve been really confident the last few outings and just threw in the zone and let my defense work.â
Cedar Ridge advanced by defeating Buda Johnson 2-0 in the Class 6A Division I regional semifinals.
Luke Irwin is the standout pitcher, having delivered 5 shutout innings in the semifinal victory.
Coach Daryl Reeves promised to dye his hair if the team reached the third round of the playoffs, which he fulfilled after their victory.
The specific date for Cedar Ridge's first regional championship series has not been mentioned in the article.

After winning 12-3 Thursday in Game 1, the Raiders needed every bit of what their duo on the mound provided as Game 2 was a pitchersâ duel. (Johnson starter Kason Hullum tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts.)
Christian Olivas provided the gameâs key hit in the top of the first inning when he belted a two-run single to right to score Kasen Langerhans and Matt Mabry. It turned out to be the only offense Cedar Ridge needed.
âI got down two strikes, and I was just like, âLetâs go be a dawg,ââ Olivas said. âI just battled and was tough, and it ended up being good for me.â
Johnson (26-9-2) put two runners on in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh, but Batton worked out of both jams, recording strikeouts to end both innings.
âBryson comes to us late (because he plays basketball for the Raiders), and the past two years, his arm is getting in shape when the (regular) season starts to finish up,â Reeves said. âHe was phenomenal against Bowie, phenomenal against (San Antonio) Reagan and then he pitched his rear off last night and tonight. So Iâm super proud of him, for sure.â
Paul Hernandez Jr. and Langerhans both finished with three hits for Cedar Ridge (25-11-2), which will play either Lake Travis or Laredo United South in the regional final.
To still be alive in late May is something particularly sweet for the Raidersâ seniors.
âI get to keep playing baseball and keep playing with my brothers,â Rice said. âIâve been in this program for four years, and this isnât just a team, itâs a family. ⊠This moment means everything.â
Itâs also significant for Reeves, who in his 11 years leading Cedar Ridge has turned the Raiders into a strong program that perennially makes the playoffs.
âItâs the first time in (program) history to reach a regional final, and weâve hit some buzzsaws (in the playoffs) in the past,â he said. âWeâve had talent and just never achieved that goal that we want. We talked about it, and sometimes you just have to have stuff go your way. ⊠And our kids believe right now.â
