SAN ANTONIO -- A cold front pushed through overnight, dropping the temperature into the 60s and kicking up the wind. Hoodies, sweatpants and blankets became necessities during a time when shorts, sunscreen and shade-providing umbrellas are the norms.
Another version of the winds of change might also be in play.
Coppell's Lexie Patton, who has been on the cusp of winning a state championship during the previous three seasons, took a big step toward claiming the elusive prize. She and partner Gabrielle Rice had no trouble with Austin Westlake's Lucy McGarrahan and Charlotte Wernli, recording a 6-1, 6-0 decision Thursday in the quarterfinals of the UIL Class 6A doubles at the Northside ISD Tennis Center.
Patton, who is signed with Louisiana Tech, lost a three-set heartbreaker in the final in 2025, and in the state semifinals in 2024 in 6A singles, and in the semifinals of doubles in 2023. She teamed with Rice this season in doubles, and the senior duo looked in top form on Thursday, displaying a solid effort at the net and punishing groundstrokes. They won the final 10 games.
"I feel, for me, to really expand as a player, doubles would be a good option," said Patton, the first Coppell tennis athlete to advance to the state tournament in each of her four varsity seasons, on the move from singles. "Gabby really wanted to do doubles with me, and so I thought this would be perfect because I can both improve my game and play with one of my best friends."
Even the elements couldn't impact their dominance.

"The wind definitely plays a big factor in how the matches will go, but the main thing we said going into it was to stay focused on our game and not get too distracted with everything else that's going on," said Rice, who is headed to Southeastern Louisiana.
Action resumes at 8 a.m. Friday, starting with the state semifinals.
The last time a Dallas ISD boys athlete stood on top of the UIL tennis world, the United States was still a few months from a stock market crash that led to the Great Depression.
W.T. White's Brodie Keller might be on the cusp of ending the long drought. He won two matches on Thursday, dropping only six games, to advance to the state semifinals. He topped El Paso's Nicloas Guevara 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals after opening with a first-round 6-2, 6-4 triumph vs. Liberty Hill's Jacob Cooper.
Hillcrest's Anne Gilliam won 5A singles in 2016, the first girl from the Dallas ISD to accomplish the feat since 1961. No player from the district has won a title since.
A year ago, Grapevine's Sara Gyorgy teamed with older sister Emilia Gyorgy to capture a second straight 5A doubles title. With Emilia now a freshman at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Sara turned her attention to playing mixed doubles with senior Noah Malin.
Gyorgy, a junior from Hungary, and Malin, a senior who is bound for TCU but is playing his last season of tennis, steamrolled Frisco Independence's Reema Reddy and Abhinav Gadwal 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
Frisco Lebanon Trail's Aaditt Rishi, who won mixed doubles state titles the past two seasons, is playing 5A boys singles this year, and his debut in the event at state was a success. He beat Austin LASA's Mahir Vallabhaneni 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.
