Uli Hoeneß congratulates Lennart Karl and Jamal Musiala for roles in helping Bayern Munich break Bundesliga scoring record
Bayern Munich honorary President and German footballing icon Uli Hoeneß has released a statement on Bayern breaking the all-time Bundesliga scoring record, congratulating Lennart Karl and Jamal Musiala on their role in helping FCB accomplish the feat. The actual player who ended up breaking the record – midfielder Leon Goretzka – admitted that he had no knowledge of his role in making history during the match and even joked about his ignominious own goal record from the 2018/19 season.
The now 74-year-old Hoeneß was a member of the 1971/72 Bayern team that scored 101 goals in a single season. That also happened to be the season that Hoeneß fellow legend Gerd Müller scored the 40 individual Bundesliga goals record that stood for nearly half-a-century before Robert Lewandowski famously scored on more 49 years later. Hoeneß still did his part for Udo Lattek’s Bayern that year with 13 tallies of his own. At the time, Hoeneß was only 19.
“In football, records are always secondary to titles,” Hoeneß noted in a statement published on Bayern’s website. “But the fact that this team has now broken our 101-goal mark after so many decades says a lot. I was delighted that a young boys like Lennart Karl scored the 100th goal last week and the same goes for Jamal Musiala, who more than deserved the 101st goal after a long injury.”
“Such players show that Bayern are well-equipped for the future,” Hoeneß continued. “What I like best is that these players don’t stop. they keep going even after the fourth or fifth goal. That’s how you break records—and most importantly: that’s how you bring joy to the fans, game after game.“
