North Carolina head coach Michael Malone is closing in on finalizing his first coaching staff, and former NBA assistant Bryan Tibaldi is in Chapel Hill this week to interview for an assistant coach position, according to Inside Carolina.
Malone nearly completed his staff with the planned hiring of former Providence head coach Kim English, but English backed out late in the process. In a twist, Tibaldi — one of English’s former assistants at Providence — has now emerged as a candidate for the Tar Heels.
Tibaldi, 41, has NBA and major college experience. He spent the past six years with the Cleveland Cavaliers, earning a promotion to assistant coach under Kenny Atkinson in September 2024. He previously served three seasons as a player development coach under J.B. Bickerstaff after two years as an assistant with Cleveland’s G League affiliate, then known as the Canton Charge.
A native of Traverse City, Mich., Tibaldi played two seasons as a walk-on at Michigan State under Tom Izzo from 2005-07. He remained with the Spartans as a graduate assistant for two more seasons, a stint that ended with Michigan State’s run to the 2009 national championship game, where it lost to North Carolina in Detroit.
Tibaldi started with the Chicago Bulls as an assistant video coordinator and basketball operations assistant before becoming video coordinator at Missouri alongside Kim English. Promoted to director of basketball operations there in 2013, he later held the same role at DePaul from 2015-17, then became an assistant coach at Cleveland State from 2017-19.
