Liam Rosenior acknowledges Chelsea's challenging position following a 1-0 loss to Manchester United, which jeopardizes their Champions League qualification hopes. The team is four points behind Liverpool and has lost four consecutive league matches without scoring.

Liam Rosenior admitted that Chelsea have a mountain to climb after a 1-0 defeat by Manchester United put another dent in their hopes of qualifying for the Champions League.
Matheus Cunha scored the only goal as United tightened their grip on third place by overcoming their defensive problems at Stamford Bridge, heaping the pressure on Rosenior after a dismal run.
Chelsea are four points off fifth-placed Liverpool, who have a chance to pull clear when they face Everton on Sunday afternoon, and were toothless against a makeshift defence. They need a response when they visit Brighton on Tuesday but have lost four straight league games without scoring for the first time since 1998.
âIt gives us a mountain to climb,â Rosenior said. âItâs not insurmountable but it gives us a mountain to climb and we have to go into Brighton with an idea that we have to win that game and kickstart the rest of our season.â
Rosenior, who was named Chelseaâs head coach after Enzo Marescaâs departure on New Yearâs Day, said he does not know what the consequences for the clubâs transfer plans will be if they miss out on the Champions League.
âThe honest answer is weâre still fighting and weâll address that situation at the end of the season, whatever the situation is,â he said. âIn terms of the game tonight, itâs a really, really difficult one to take because people donât want to hear me say how well we played and didnât win the game. Weâre here to win.
âThere are many elements actually that the process of underlying things that weâre looking into suggest that if you stay in this process we will win games of football. It doesnât look like it at the moment but the reality is Manchester United have come in, had one shot, won a goal against 10 men and won a game 1-0 which should be pretty much impossible.â

Rosenior said that a devastated EstĂȘvĂŁo Willian was crying at half-time after suffering a hamstring injury. Enzo FernĂĄndez also limped off with a calf injury in the second half. FernĂĄndez was not given the captainâs armband after returning from a club imposed two-game ban, with MoisĂ©s Caicedo leading the side out instead.

âThe decision is we have a leadership group,â Rosenior said. âI feel like wearing the armband is an honour for this club. Enzo played like a captain today. I thought he was magnificent. I think that shows actually where heâs been with us all this while. Iâm very, very happy with his performance. Iâm very, very happy with him.â
Michael Carrick praised Ayden Heavenâs performance in central defence for United, who stood firm as they moved 10 points clear of sixth place thanks to their first win at Stamford Bridge since 2020, and was impressed with Kobbie Mainooâs display in midfield.
âComing here we havenât had a great record,â Carrick said. âRecords are there to be broken.â
