Often counted out, TJ Guy always rose above his station. As a recruit, he wasn't heralded. As a true freshman in Ann Arbor, he wasn't thought of by the fans, either. Yet, Guy always overcame every obstacle.
He rose to the occasion, but not so much that he was able to fully live out his dreams. His phone didn't ring with an NFL general manager during the seven rounds of the draft the past three days. Even before that, finally in position as a starting edge rusher, the tantalizing prospect of moving linebacker Jaishawn Barham from the middle to the front diminished his role. Yet, he still performed.
Now, with his former defensive coordinator and position coach on the Baltimore Ravens, Guy has a chance anew. Despite not hearing his name called in the draft, he signed with Jesse Minter and the Ravens as an undrafted free agent.
Guy appeared in 12 games in his final season with the Wolverines, amassing 18 tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries, and an interception. He'll not only reteam with Minter and defensive line coach Lou Esposito, but also with defensive tackle Rayshaun Benny, who was selected with the No. 250 overall pick in the seventh round by Baltimore.
A three-star recruit from Massachusetts, who had committed to Michigan expecting to play for Don Brown, Guy played in two games in 2021, and managed a sack in a pivotal Maryland game the penultimate week of the season. He saw 10 games of action the following year, but meagerly managed four tackles. In 2023, it wasn't much more -- 10 tackles, a sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss. His role grew significantly in 2024, with 32 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and 7.5 tackles for loss.
