FORT WORTH â Sometimes the best cure for chaos is getting back to routine.
Less than 24 hours before the first game between Colleyville Heritage and Chisholm Trailâs bi-district series, both teams had prepared for completely different opponents.
Colleyville Heritage was getting ready to load buses and take on reigning 5A Division I state champions Aledo Thursday evening and Chisholm Trail was set to take on the reigning two-time 5A Division II state champions, Grapevine. Hours before both games were set to start, Grapevine self-reported the use of an ineligible player to the UIL and thus forfeited their participation from the playoffs.
Due to the infraction being reported before the start of the games, the UIL was able to reset the bracket, replacing Grapevine with Denton Ryan.
All of a sudden, Colleyville Heritage was set to drop down to the Division II bracket and now face Chisholm Trail.
Over the following three to four hours in the wake of the news, both coaches had to hammer out logistics for locations and times for the series. With the time crunch, and other fields around the area already being booked, Colleyville Heritage head coach Chris McMullen just agreed to play the whole series at Chisholm Trail.
âWhen you're in that kind of time crunch about seven o'clock last night, you know, you just got to make a decision,â McMullen said.
Chisholm Trail head coach Mason Munguia is in the midst of his first playoff run as head man. Needless to say he'd never dealt with anything like the previous 24 hours.
âWe went from wondering if we're going to get a bye to then finding out we have a new opponent,â Munguia said. âThen weâre scrambling to make the arrangements and then try to get some scouting material and stuff on them, and so it works out for us. It works out for them. I feel like we're evenly matched teams.
Grapevine self-reported the use of an ineligible player, leading to their forfeiture from the playoffs.
Colleyville Heritage was set to play Aledo, while Chisholm Trail was scheduled to face Grapevine.
This matchup is significant as it features two teams that were not originally slated to compete against each other due to last-minute changes in the playoff structure.
The game is scheduled for Thursday evening, shortly after the announcement of Grapevine's forfeiture.

âYou kind of go into the series blind which, for a coach, is scary and nerve-wracking. But I think, for the kids, it's just going out and playing ball and things like that. Itâs definitely been a whirlwind over the last 24 hours.â
In the midst of the chaos, both coaches had to get their players refocused on new opponents.
âI think it was good to be around the kids to hit (pregame) today, honestly,â McMullen said. âThe guys just want to play. I think sometimes as adults, we can over-think it and what bracket and what does that look like, and that's my job, to make sure that we're scouting the correct opponent and to get the logistics taken care of.â
The two teams had actually met earlier this season with Chisholm Trail run-ruling Colleyville Heritage, 11-1. McMullen wanted to make sure that his young team, that replaced eight starters off last seasonâs regional finalist squad, wasnât losing sight of that despite them no longer playing Aledo.
âI understand not playing Aledo, itâs easy to maybe take the foot off the gas, human nature, especially being inexperienced,â McMullen said. âBut we told them man, in a tournament, these guys run-ruled us.
âWe told them when you all come over here today, these guys are also ready to go. They're not playing the defending champs either anymore. They're playing a team that they run-ruled in a tournament.â
Jobe Reedâs RBI single kicked things off in the top of the first inning for Colleyville. The game stood 1-0 until Graham Barton and Michael Namy added to it with RBIs in the fifth frame. Chisholm Trailâs Ivan Serrano started a late rally in the bottom of the seventh to score his teamâs first run before Karsyn Thomas closed things out for Heritage to claim a 4-2 win.
âAt the end of the day though you just got to trust in your kids that they're going to show up and play and we will, when we did today, they just got a couple more hits than we did, and that was the difference in it,â Munguia said.
The series picks back up at Chisholm Trail High School on Friday at 7 p.m. with a Game 3, if needed, set for Saturday at noon at the same location.
