Union St Gilloise face crucial seven days in hunt for Belgian domestic double
The next seven days are set to have a major impact on how Union St Gilloise look back on the 2025/2026 season. If all goes well, they could be looking at a domestic double this time next week. However, if things go badly, the side could see two trophies slip from their grasp in a matter of days.
As David Hubert said following the sides victory over KV Mechelen this weekend ‘We are in second place, but we are not satisfied with that’. Yet before Union St Gilloise can rectify where they are in the league, they will face city rivals Anderlecht in the Belgian Cup final. This is the first all Brussels cup final in the competitions history, and Union St Gilloise will go in to the final as hot favourites. They won the cup two years ago, following it up with the league last season.
If they want to complete the domestic double, there will be no time for a hangover if they do win the cup. This weekend they will travel to Brugge for a clash with Club Brugge. Union St Gilloise won the reverse fixture in Brussels, but failed to capitalise on the lead that earned them. They will travel to Brugge having to win to overtake their title rivals. Failure to win see’s them relying on other sides to led them a hand in the final weeks of the season.
Union St Gilloise have had an incredible rise in recent seasons, and if you had told the fans when they were in the Belgian second tier just a few years ago that they would be fighting for a domestic double they would have thought you were crazy. Yet, fantastic recruitment and team spirit, alongside plenty of talent, has seen them join Club Brugge as the premier team in Belgian football. Even Club Brugge have struggled to win a domestic double in recent years, with Antwerp the last team to manage it.
Union St Gilloise will play in the Belgian Cup final against Anderlecht and then face Club Brugge in a league match.
The week is crucial because winning both matches could secure them a domestic double, while losses could mean missing out on two trophies.
The final is historic as it marks the first all Brussels cup final, and Union St Gilloise enters as the favorite after previously winning the cup.
