If you've been expecting Anthony Richardson to get shipped off to a new home this offseason amidst his vocal wishes for a trade, in the words of the legendary football coach and analyst Lee Corso â not so fast, my friend. It turns out Richardson may not be going anywhere after all.
Richardson requested a trade and was granted permission by the Colts to speak with other teams earlier this offseason. It was recently announced that the franchise would not pick up the 2027 option on his rookie contract. But despite all this, Richardson showed up on Monday for the team's voluntary offseason training after staying home over the past two weeks.
ESPN's Colts reporter, Stephen Holder, indicated on Monday that the Colts seem no closer to trading Richardson and have not indicated any plans to release him at this moment, so it makes sense Richardson would get back to work. But exactly what prompted his return this week after skipping the past two weeks is still unknown, and Holder also said fans should 'stay tuned.'
Reports in recent weeks from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler indicated that Richardson might be a likely candidate for a trade to the Packers, but nothing has materialized on that front, and the Packers added veteran quarterback Tyrod Taylor on Monday.
Richardson was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and made four starts as a rookie before missing the rest of the season due to injury. He made 11 starts for the Colts in 2024 but threw 12 interceptions and just 8 touchdowns, posted a 47.7 completion percentage, and led the Colts to a 6-5 record as a starter. He made two appearances last year, but spent most of his season on the bench.

Declining Anthony Richardson's fifth-year option means the Colts will not guarantee his contract for the 2027 season, impacting his future with the team.
