Iran’s participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup has been a major talking point for the past few months since war in the region broke out following military action by the U.S. and Israel in February. However, former U.S. Men’s National Team defender Alexi Lalas believes the tournament could prove a catalyst for positivity and “a better future.”
Having qualified for the tournament last March, Iran was subsequently drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. However, the nation has yet to fully commit to participating in the largely U.S.-based competition, with around a month to go until kickoff.
This comes despite FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s recently insisting that Iran will be competing in the tournament, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s previous warning that while “welcome,” he didn’t “believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety.”

In the most recent development, the Iranian football federation stated that it would compete if its 10 conditions were met. These include the granting of visas, respect for all involved in the national team, their flag, and anthem. The federation is also seeking assurances regarding security at airports, hotels, and whilst traveling to and from venues, as per The Mirror.
“We will definitely participate in the 2026 World Cup, but the hosts must take our concerns into account,” the federation wrote.
“We will participate in the World Cup tournament, but without any retreat from our beliefs, culture, and convictions.”
Whether or not the federation’s conditions will be met remains to be seen, as does the outcome of an upcoming meeting between the organization’s president, Mehdi Taj, and FIFA representatives in Zurich, after Taj was turned away at the Canadian border prior to the recent FIFA Congress meeting in Vancouver due to his prior links with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Should Iran end up competing, according to Lalas, the tournament could potentially help heal some wounds. In a post on social media, the player turned analyst wrote, “I actually think the Iran games in this World Cup will be overwhelmingly celebratory events and wonderfully positive atmospheres.
“It's an opportunity for the large and passionate Iranian-American community to proudly celebrate their country...and hopefully a better future.”
Iran’s first game is scheduled for June 15 against New Zealand before they take on Belgium six days later, with both games slated to be held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. They will then close out their group stage on June 26 against Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.
Both the winner and the runner-up in each group are guaranteed a spot in the Round of 32, whilst eight of the top-performing third-placed teams will also progress.
