‘Very interesting name’: Christian Falk shares Bayern transfer stance on Man City star

Manchester City attacker Phil Foden could be a “very interesting” option for Bayern Munich, but the Bavarian giants are not planning a move for him in the summer window.

Foden remains under contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2027, although he has yet to sign an extension, which has led to some speculation over his long-term future.

The 25-year-old has experienced a dip in form this season, but Pep Guardiola has publicly backed him to rediscover his best level in the near future.

A product of City’s academy, Foden made his senior debut in 2017 and has since made over 360 appearances for the club, scoring 110 goals.

The left-footed attacker has already won 18 major trophies with the Citizens and has also contributed 60 assists, underlining his importance over the years.

Foden remains an integral part of Guardiola’s setup and played a key role in the club’s historic treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, registering 19 goals and eight assists.

While Manchester City are confident that he will eventually commit to a new deal, the delay has inevitably alerted potential suitors across Europe.

Bayern Munich have been linked with a move in recent weeks, but Christian Falk has told CFBayern Insider that the club do not view him as a realistic target.

Do Bayern Munich need Phil Foden?

Bayern already possess strong options in attacking midfield and wide areas, including Michael Olise and Lennart Karl, which limits the need for a player of Foden’s profile despite his undeniable quality.

Furthermore, the German champions are prioritising the addition of a player who can provide competition for Luis Diaz on the opposite flank – a role that Foden does not naturally fill.

Foden’s high wages would also make any potential deal financially demanding, adding another layer of complication to a possible transfer.

Falk explained: “It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are looking at Phil Foden ahead of the summer. He’s a very interesting name, of course.

But Bayern are not looking for a player like him – someone expensive who would expect to start every game. They are searching for a backup option on the left wing behind Luis Diaz.

They already have Diaz, Michael Olise, Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala and the young Lennart Karl, who needs minutes to continue his development. Realistically, where would Phil Foden fit into this team? It would not be an ideal move for either side.”
