The San Antonio Spurs are entering the NBA Playoffs well-equipped and fully able. Victor Wembanyama has proven himself to be a top player in the league and will probably lead the squad to a Larry O'Brien trophy. However, there is one person missing in this title run that a lot of fans know — Coach Gregg Popovich. Despite his absence, he gave Stephon Castle and the rest of the team a few words to live by before their games.
The Spurs know their identity and have formed schemes well around Victor Wembanyama. Statistically, they should be one of the favorites to win the championship alongside the Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder. While they have those technicalities figured out, Coach Gregg Popovich still had one reminder before the NBA Playoffs that focused on intangibles.
Stephon Castle unveiled what Popovich said to the Spurs, via Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
"His message was not to really do anything different from what we’ve been doing all season. I think he kind of just gave us another perspective on how well we’ve been playing and the position we’ve put ourselves in. So, just keep doing what we’ve been doing to get in those spots," Castle said about their interaction with Coach Popovich.

Notably, Coach Popovich started letting go of the Spurs head coaching job after he suffered a stroke in November of 2024. He officially handed the responsibly over to Coach Mitch Johnson who continues to work alongside Wembanyama and Castle.
“He’s helped me and a lot of the other guys on the team, just having somebody to talk to. Whether games are going good, games are going bad, just knowing Pop, he’ll always tell you the real," the Spurs guard added.
This will mark the first time in 30 years that Coach Popovich won't be helping the Spurs in their NBA Playoffs run. Unfortunately, he was also not able to lead Wembanyama to the postseason in his first years with the team. Nonetheless, the Spurs should heed his advice. If there is anyone who knows how to win with the Spurs, it is the person who got them five Larry O'Brien trophies and had a 22-year NBA Playoffs streak.
