During the week of April 5-11, Ames-area high school female athletes excelled in soccer, track, tennis, and golf, despite weather challenges. The Ames Tribune is inviting readers to vote for the Athlete of the Week based on their performances.
The week of April 5-11 saw Ames-area high school girls soccer, track and field tennis and golf teams and athletes have another productive week despite weather interfering with several events.
Track meets featuring area teams were limited due to the weather, but Ames and Ballard competed at the Jim Duncan Invitational on April 11 in Des Moines. Roland-Story and Nevada ran at the Woodward-Granger Invite on April 10 in Woodward.
In girls golf, Ames placed sixth at the Northwest Invitational on April 6 at the Legacy Golf Club in Norwalk. The 3A No. 13 Ames girls soccer team tied Pella (1-1) and defeated Fort Dodge (4-0), 3A No. 12 Nevada defeated Central Iowa United (8-0) and fell to No. 7 Bondurant-Farrar (4-0) and 3A No. 14 Gilbert topped Ballard (7-1) and tied 4A No. 14 Southeast Polk (1-1).
Several area female high school athletes stepped up with impressive performances during the week.

Westort had a busy opening week for the Ames girls soccer team.
Westort scored Ames' only goal during its 1-1 tie with 2A No. 11 Pella to open the season on April 6 at Ames. She added two more goals during the Little Cyclones' 4-0 victory at Fort Dodge on April 10.
Betting pulled off a hat-trick for the Nevada girls soccer team during its 8-0 victory over Central Iowa United on April 6 at Nevada.
Betting found the back of the net three times for the Cubs. She also handed out two assists on the night.
Geise won the girls discus and placed second in the shot put for Roland-Story at the Woodward-Granger Co-ed track and field meet on April 10 in Woodward.
Geise won the discus with a throw of 111 feet, nine inches. He had a toss of 30-10 in the shot to place second to Nevada's Rizzy Carsrud, who threw a 32-5.
Platts assisted Kylie Marquette on Gilbert's only goal during the Tiger girls soccer team's 1-1 tie with Southeast Polk on April 9 at Pleasant Hill.
Platts also scored one goal during Gilbert's 7-1 victory over Ballard on April 6 in Huxley.
Van Cleave placed first in the girls 400-meter hurdles at the Jim Duncan Invitational track and field meet on April 11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Van Cleave won with a time of 1:04.36. She beat out Adel-Desoto-Minburn's Elise Coghlan, who ran 1:05.69.
