The spring playoff season is here and there were some excellent performances by high school athlete in the Greater Savannah area.
Region track and field meets were held last week as top area athletes worked to qualify for the upcoming Sectional meets that serve as state qualifiers. There were some impressive performance across the board.
In baseball, Benedictine, Calvary Day, Savannah Christian and Bryan County all advanced to the second round of the GHSA playoffs.
This is a chance for readers to weigh in and select the Savannah Morning News High School Athlete of the Week in an open poll with no restrictions on the voting. The poll will close on Tuesday, May 5, at 11 a.m.
Here are the candidates.
The UGA-bound senior won the 300 meter hurdles in 37.99, the 100 meters in 10.76 and the long jump with a leap of 24-6 at the Region 1-6A meet. His long jump mark, tying a personal best, is the top mark in Georgia this year across all classifications. His best 300 hurdle time this season (36.10) in second overall in the state and sixth in the nation.
The junior swept his three events in the Region 1-5A Track and Field Meet. He won the 100 meters in 10.57, took the 200 title in 21.33 and also won the 400 meter crown in 47.95.
The junior won three races at the Region 2-3A meet. She won the 8000 in 2:32.72 and the 1,600 in 5:28.07, while coming home with the 3200 meter title in 13:16.39.
The senior won the 100 meter hurdles (14.81), the 300 meter hurdles (46.76), the long jump (18-3) and the triple jump with a mark of 37-4 to help lead the Warriors to the team title at the Region 3-3A meet.
Jenkins junior Blessed Diogo is a star on the Warrior track and field team.
The junior won the 100 meters in 10.70 and the 200 meters (21.96) to help lead the Cadets to the Region 1-4A title., their eighth straight regional championship.
The sophomore earned the win in a deciding Game 3 playoff victory over Georgia Military College, as he struck out six and allowed five hits in five innings. At the plate, he drew a pair of walks and scored a run.
The junior won the 1600 meters at the Region 1-6A meet with a school record time of 4:15.12, edging teammate Myles Head (4:16.63). Howell also won the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.15.
The junior was second in the 100 meters in 12.36, fourth in the 200 (24.51) and third in the long jump (16-10.5) to qualify for sectionals in all three events at the Region 1-5A meet.
Headley dished out five assists and scored a goal as the Cadet lacrosse team closed out the regular season with a 15-0 win over Savannah Country Day.
The senior shortstop went 3-for-5 with a home run and seven RBIs as the Raiders swept a double header against Mt. Bethel in the first round of the GHSA Private School playoffs. He is hitting .471 with an OPS of 1.478 with 10 doubles, 10 homers and 52 RBIs.
The sophomore earned the win allowing two runs over five innings and helped his own cause by going 3 for 5 with a double and two RBIs in a playoff win over Madison County.

The senior won the 200 meters in 22.79 and took the 400 meter title in 51.11 at the Region A-3A Private Schools Meet last week. He also qualified for the Sectional Meet with a fourth place finish in the 100 meters (11.30). Sikes signed to compete at Furman University on Friday.
The standout freshman won the 400 meters (55.10) and was second in the 100 meters (12.28) and second in the 200 meters (24.64) at the Region 1-6A meet.
The senior allowed just one hit over six innings and struck out eight without a walk in a 10-0 playoff win over Galloway, Calvary won the next game to advance to the second round of the GHSA Private School playoffs.
The junior won the 800 meters in 2:03.30, the 1600 in 4:48.07 and was third in the 3,200 meters at the Region 1-4A meet.
The sophomore won the 800 meters (2:12.71), the 1,600 (4:59.72) and the 3,200 (11:14.16) to sweep her events at the Region 1-6A meet. Her 800 meter and 1,600 meter times were personal bests.
The senior had a strong showing at the Region A-3A Private Schools Meet. He won the 1600 meters in 4:46.72 and the 800 meters in 2:06.35. He was second in the 400 meters (51.71) and finished fourth in the 3200 (12:26.38) as he qualified for sectionals in all four events.
The junior won the 800 meters in 2:31.02, the 400 meters (1:02.52) and also took home the title in the 1600 in 5:36.8 at the Region A-3A Private Schools Meet.
The senior won the 100 meters (10.85) and the 200 meters (21.62) at the Region 3-3A meet.
The senior won the shot put with a throw of 49-11 and the discus with a toss of 148-6 at the Region 1-4A meet.
