Mourinho increasingly likely to become next Real Madrid head coach
Jose Mourinho is likely to become the next head coach of Real Madrid.
The baseball regular season is nearing its end, with playoffs approaching. Bishop Hendricken leads Division I, East Greenwich tops Division II, and Woonsocket is close to an unbeaten season in Division III.
The last full week of the baseball regular season is upon us.
There are still a few scattered games scheduled after Sunday, but the playoffs will be underway before we know it. Itâs a sprint to Rhode Island College from there in all three divisions.
Bishop Hendricken continues to set the pace in Division I, leading La Salle in the tournament standings and East Providence by a game in the loss column. The Hawks rebounded nicely after a lone loss to the Townies and are riding an eight-game winning streak â two of those came against the Rams.
East Greenwich still sits atop Division II but might be hearing footsteps. Ponaganset is sizzling and handed the Avengers a second defeat of the season to begin last week. Middletown, West Warwick and Narragansett are all among those still lurking and should be considered dangerous once the double-elimination format takes hold.
Woonsocket is four games from an unbeaten regular season in Division III and has opened a gap over Exeter-West Greenwich, Scituate, Providence Country Day and Juanita Sanchez. The Villa Novans have posted three shutouts by a combined 38-0 after a tight 4-3 win over Pawtucket Co-op in a finals series rematch.

This is the time of year when great players lift their respective teams. Standouts on the mound and in the lineup could be the difference between spending another day in uniform and packing up for the summer. Some of them will be featured here in the next set of nominees for the Longplex Athlete of the Week for Baseball.
Polls will be posted every Monday morning with the previous weekâs nominees and run through Friday. Thereâs only one way to vote â click the link on the story, find the ballot included within and pick your player. Phone calls, emails and stating your preference in person wonât qualify.
Anthony DeLuca took 51% of the more than 6,400 votes cast in last week's Longplex Athlete of the Week poll for baseball.
DeLuca played a key role in all three wins for the Patriots two weeks ago. He knocked a run-scoring double in a 6-1 triumph over Westerly, allowed just four hits while striking out five in a 4-1 shutdown of South Kingstown and added two runs scored and an RBI in a 13-2 spanking of city rival Toll Gate.
Bishop Hendricken is currently leading Division I in the tournament standings.
East Greenwich, Ponaganset, Middletown, West Warwick, and Narragansett are among the teams competing in Division II.
Woonsocket is four games away from completing an unbeaten regular season in Division III.
The double-elimination format allows teams to have a second chance after a loss, making the playoffs more competitive.

Jose Mourinho is likely to become the next head coach of Real Madrid.

Winners will be announced in the following Athlete of the Week poll. The prize is pretty simple â nothing tangible. Bragging rights, a bit of extra exposure on social media, the right to belong to an exclusive club by the start of June â that's about it.
We canât do this alone. We need your help â engagement, reporting scores, spreading the word about the poll. Thatâs all up to you. We can facilitate in a few different ways, but this weekly competition will be what you make of it â we appreciate you for it.
Coaches and athletic administrators from either team in a given game are asked to contact us through the Game Changer app, by phone at (401) 277-7340 or via email at pjsports@providencejournal.com. Weâll accept phone and email submissions Monday through Friday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., and weâll also check email over the course of the weekend. Getting in touch as early as possible will always be preferable.
Most importantly â we hope everyone stays healthy and has a great season. It will be fun to follow along over the next month on the journey to Rhode Island College. Thanks to all for taking part and keeping us in mind.
Thatâs enough of a preamble. Itâs time for the Week 6 nominees (in alphabetical order).
Burt chipped in with the bat to go along with his typical contribution on the mound during a three-game week. He scored a run in a 9-1 win over St. Raphael and collected a hit, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored in a mercy-rule victory over North Smithfield. Burt pitched the middle game against Toll Gate and was superb, allowing a lone single and fanning 11 over five innings in a 7-0 shutout.
DaFonseca came up with the key hit as the Eagles recorded their best win of the season, a 6-4 triumph over La Salle. His three-run double was part of a day that saw him close 3-for-4 and score twice. That came after DaFonseca reached safely three times â two walks and a hit â and scored three runs in a 12-6 victory over Portsmouth.
Zayden Kent, Narragansett baseball, April 16, 2026
Kent helped the Mariners get back on track last week by coming up one out shy of a no-hitter against Middletown. He struck out 12 over 6 2/3 dominant innings and cracked a pair of run-scoring doubles in a 5-2 win over the Islanders. Kent added another hit in a pitcherâs duel against Westerly, a 1-0 shutout over a Division I opponent.
April 28, 2026 Woonsocket Baseball PATRICK MUNGER
The Villa Novans are still rolling and Munger is one of the main reasons. His pitching and hitting were key to a pair of victories last week over Hope and Tiverton. Munger struck out 14 while driving in two and scoring twice in a win over the Blue Wave. He added a 4-for-4 performance and three runs scored in a triumph over the Tigers.
The Townies rebounded from just their second loss of the season with wins on consecutive days. Palombo was key in both, driving home the deciding run on a fielderâs choice in the top of the eighth inning Friday in a 2-1 triumph over Smithfield. He added three hits and two runs scored out of the leadoff spot Saturday as East Providence cruised past Portsmouth.
