From championship coaches to prolific players, the Treasure Coast has enjoyed plenty of influential girls basketball figures across its history.
USA TODAY Sports will celebrate theĀ 250 greatest American sports figures of all time in conjunction with theĀ United States' 250th anniversary.
Additionally, the USA TODAY Network will highlight the roots of the countryās sports culture:Ā the high school athletes and sports figures who shaped communities and defined their states. This will include trailblazers and trendsetters whose influence reaches beyond championships and statistics. First, we are going to take a look at athletes in their individual sports.
This week, we're honoring the stars of girls basketball. It was no easy task to narrow this list down with so many impactful figures hailing from the Treasure Coast.
Listed in alphabetical order, these players were all standouts at the high school level before moving on to even greater heights in college and the pros.

Lincoln Park Academy girls basketball coach Wendell Adams speaks at halftime of Friday's home game against Jensen Beach High. Adams announced his retirement at the end of the season. He picked up his 553rd victory as the Greyhounds defeated the Falcons, 62-22.
Adams' 39-year tenure at Lincoln Park Academy produced a record-breaking number of wins and countless lives touched at the helm of the Lady Greyhounds program. Upon retiring at the end of the 2026 season, Adams was the winningest girls basketball coach all-time (558) on the Treasure Coast. Lincoln Park Academy named its court after him in 2024. Adams' local influence dates back to the Treasure Coast's first girls basketball state champions as he was an assistant coach with the legendary 1987 Fort Pierce Central team.

Port St. Lucie West Centennial sophomore Tyrell Hightower, left, and freshman Lawona Davis are both stand-outs on their repective squads this year. Photo taken Friday, Jan. 15, 1999.
Davis was a record breaker at St. Lucie West Centennial. She scored more than 2,500 points and grabbed 1,500 rebounds over her career and was a McDonald's All-American finalist. Davis was an elite base stealer on the softball diamond and a two-time track and field state champion in the 400-meter run. She went on to enjoy a productive collegiate career with Old Dominion during its peak years, winning three conference and regular season titles and making four NCAA Tournament appearances. Davis also played professional basketball overseas.
Gorman's success at Vero Beach High School was nothing short of remarkable. A multi-sport star, Gorman shined on Vero Beach's dominant girls lacrosse team and was the top scorer (18.7) and rebounder (14.7) on the Fighting Indians' historic state championship basketball team. Vero Beach finished 29-1 en route to the Class 8A state title, the first and only state title in program history. TCPalm honored Gorman as its overall Female Athlete of the Year. She played four seasons at Yale and was named team captain for her senior season.
2004 Girls Basketball Large Schools Player of the Year: Albrey Grimsley, Centennial
Grimsley found success on the hardwood at each step of her basketball career. She ran the point at St. Lucie West Centennial, winning four district titles and reaching a state semifinal in 2002. Grimsley then played four seasons with the University of Miami, captaining the team during her senior season. She moved into coaching at the close of her playing career and spent time on staffs at Central Florida, Indian River State College and Northwood University (now Keiser) before serving as head coach at St. Thomas University.
Brittany Jackson of Sebastian River is the 2012 Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
Jackson was one of the stars of Sebastian River's prime years under veteran head coach Terri Amy. The duo's crowning achievement, the 2012 Class 7A state championship, was the first in school history and the first by an Indian River County program. Jackson enjoyed a solid collegiate career in Division I hoops as well, first signing with Georgia Tech and later transferring to play at Ole Miss.

Iuliucci enjoyed success at Centennial, coaching Lawona Davis and Co. to the state semifinal, before notching her crowning achievement with Jensen Beach in 2007. The Falcons' Class 4A state championship was the first by a girls high school basketball program from Martin County and the Treasure Coast's first since Fort Pierce Central in 1987. She moved into school administration as an assistant principal in Martin County after the title.
Sixteen-year-old Port St. Lucie resident Brandy Montgomery is the star shooting guard for the Lincoln Park Academy, having averaged 22 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game for the 23-4 district champions as a sophomore.
Montgomery has been a bucket-getter since her days at Lincoln Park Academy. Now she's back with the Lady Greyhounds, succeeding a local legend at head coach. Montgomery averaged 31.0 points per game as a senior and scored more than 3,000 career points as a varsity player, earning Florida Class 4A Player of the Year honors her senior year. She was a four-year starter at Auburn, averaging 10 points or better every year, and later played professionally overseas. She's currently the head coach at Lincoln Park Academy, the successor to her former coach Wendell Adams.

Morgan, a disciple of longtime Vero Beach boys basketball head coach Chuck Loewendick, instilled a defensive mentality to elevate the girls basketball program in 15 years at the helms of the Fighting Indians' girls hoops program. Morgan's magnum opus, a historic 29-1 march to the Class 8A state championship in 2016, was the most recent girls basketball state championship on the Treasure Coast.

Pound and her cousin Brittany Jackson teamed up to make history at Sebastian River in 2012. The Sharks won the Class 7A state championship, the first in school history and first by an Indian River County girls hoops program, under the leadership of veteran head coach Terri Amy. Pound went on to play college basketball at Florida International University, where she earned Conference USA Freshman of the Year and inspiring with her return to the basketball court after the birth of her first child.

Seitel's tenure at Fort Pierce Central helped put Treasure Coast girls basketball on the map at the end of the 20th century. Fielding a talented roster with future WNBA player Sophia Witherspoon, Seitel led the Cobras to a 33-2 record and the 1987 Class 3A state title, the first for a Treasure Coast high school girls basketball program. He continued coaching locally into the 1990s, including a stint with Fort Pierce Westwood.

Witherspoon is a breakthrough figure in Treasure Coast basketball history. She was the top player on Fort Pierce Central's 1987 state championship team, which finished 33-2 for the Treasure Coast's first girls hoops state title. Witherspoon then shined with the Florida Gators, earning First-Team All-SEC honors in 1991 and induction into the Gators Athletic Hall of Fame. She was a second-round pick in the 1997 WNBA Draft and ultimately played seven professional seasons, her best coming in 2000 when she averaged 16.8 points per game. Witherspoon later returned to serve as head coach with Fort Pierce Central's girls basketball program.
