It's time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Boys Athlete of the Week for the week of May 4-9.
Last week, Matanzas tennis player Stanislav Valenteychik captured the honors, claiming 58% of the votes. The senior won the clinching tiebreaker in No. 3 singles to push the Pirates past top-seeded Innovation in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.
Halifax Health is partnering with the Daytona Beach News-Journal to honor our Volusia-Flagler area high school athletes every week.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees for upcoming polls from across the area via email at cvinel@usatodayco.com. Please send a player's name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday.
To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.
Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Saturday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour. Emailed votes will not count.
Jordan Haymon, Flagler Palm Coast: The senior won a Class 4A state championship as a member of the Bulldogs’ 4x400-meter relay team. He also sped to second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.82 seconds.
Brison Sullivan, New Smyrna Beach: The senior captured a state title and established a new FHSAA record with a 65.21-meter javelin throw during the Class 3A meet.
Joseph Abrantes, Father Lopez: Abrantes won a Class 1A state title in the 154-pound weight class, hoisting an Olympic total of 480. He also finished second on the traditional leaderboard.
Brian Begnoche, Spruce Creek: At 199 pounds, the senior claimed a Class 3A state crown with a 615 Olympic total. He ranked third in traditional.

Todd Cutler Jr., New Smyrna Beach: The sophomore amassed a state-winning 585 Olympic total in the 183-pound weight class at the Class 2A meet. He added a second-place finish in traditional.
Maverick Grimm, Father Lopez: The junior earned a 1A state title at 169 pounds, putting forth a 525 Olympic score. He also took third in traditional.
Matthew McFall, Flagler Palm Coast: McFall grabbed a 3A state championship in the unlimited weight class. He dominated with a 660 Olympic total and also placed third in traditional.
Peyton McKenzie, DeLand: The junior secured two 4A state championships in the 238-pound weight class, triumphing with a 775 traditional score and a 685 Olympic total.
Anthony Nguyen, Atlantic: Nguyen posted the top traditional score (740) at the Class 2A state meet, winning a championship in the 238-pound weight class.
Cody Strawser, Flagler Palm Coast: The junior won a 3A state title with a 460 Olympic total in the 129-pound weight class. He also was the traditional runner-up with a score of 485.
