Warriors' Mike Dunleavy addresses Draymond Green's contract situation

Draymond Green has a player option on his contract for next season. If he opts in, he will earn $27.6 million ahead of becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2027. However, Green could look to opt out and sign a longer-term deal with the Golden State Warriors, essentially swapping some money for future stability. Either way, Green has an important decision to make.

When speaking with the media on Friday, May 15, Mike Dunleavy Jr. addressed Green's contract situation, noting how both sides have previously expressed their desire for the veteran forward to end his career in the Bay Area.

“Draymond’s got a player option, so the ball is in his court in terms of returning,” Dunleavy said. "I think we’ve had the discussions where we want him to finish his career as a Warrior, and he kind of feels the same way. I expect him to be back, but it’s his call on that.”

Green, 36, is still a key member of Steve Kerr's rotation. Even at this late stage in his career, his ability to organize the defense, read the floor and operate as a connector makes him a valuable member of the team. Green also boasts significant championship experience, which will not only help push the Warriors toward contention but also aid in the development of the younger players on the roster.

The most logical outcome for Green is that he finds a way to remain with Golden State while also locking down his immediate future. However, nothing in the NBA is guaranteed, so all we can do is wait to see how his situation plays out during the offseason.
