Was Sean McVay upset with the Rams taking Ty Simpson?

The Los Angeles shocked a lot of people in the football world last night with the selection of Ty Simpson at the No. 13 slot.

Apparently, so was head coach Sean McVay. In his press conference after the draft, he didn’t seem happy, and it was quite obvious.

It seems McVay was unaware that management would make this pick.

McVay’s comments afterward were short and sweet.

“We’ve talked about the importance of Jimmy [Garoppolo]. To be able to add somebody that you can evaluate a body of work where he was asked to play the position and a lot of things that do translate in terms of concepts, reading with his feet, some of the different things in the drop back in the play-action game and the movement game. There are a lot of things that [Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan] Grubb did that’s very similar to how we operate so it made it an easier evaluation to be able to say, ‘Alright, what would that look like if he did translate it to our level?’”

Even with the drafting of Simpson, McVay made it clear this was still Matthew Stafford’s team.

"Let’s make one thing clear: this is Matthew’s team,” McVay said.

Rams management was not taking Simpson to replace Stafford this year; they took him to replace him in the future. With the news of Jimmy Garoppolo considering retiring and the struggles of Stetson Bennett off the field, the Rams took Simpson.

Most think the Rams were the perfect landing spot for him. He can learn from an NFL great and an offensive genius, yet McVay’s reaction told a different story.
